The National Lottery Community Fund has confirmed it will award a grant worth £500,000 to the transgender children’s charity Mermaids following a two-month review into the funding. Last month, gamer Hbomberguy—whose real name is Harry Brewis—raised $300,000 for the charity by live-streaming himself playing Donkey Kong 64. Around 600,000 people watched all or parts of the Twitch stream, which saw congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and whistleblower Chelsea Manning calling in to support trans rights and Hbomberguy’s fundraising effort.
The £500,000 grant will support Mermaids over the course of five years. Mermaids CEO Susie Green tells PinkNews: “Mermaids are delighted with the outcome of the review, and cannot wait to get started on this much needed and vital project with the support of the National Lottery Community Fund.
Still can't get over the fact that AOC was on a Twitch stream talking about the N64. This whole thing has been quite the middle finger to Graham Linehan, and that makes me more than happy.
I haven't heard of hbomberguy since the days of metokur. He did a total 180 huh
Imagine being so awful at twitter that the world turns 500k into 800k just to spite you
#ThanksGraham
Get in the fucking hole, Graham.
expand charity
Eat smelly, rancid shit, Graham Linehan.
Today, Graham Linehan discovers the Striesand Effect.
I almost thought Graham Linehan was an anagram of Lindsey Graham or something.
thanks graham
Hbomberguy did something decent, even if it was just to spite Graham and while I might dislike the person in charge of this charity, I hope the money is put to good use.
Hbomber raised about £265,684 (converted from the $347,000). So a bit over half of what the grant is, so now they have access to over £760,000.
Incredible, and the best outcome.
Why do people dislike Hbomberguy? I barely know anything about him
As far as I can tell people don't like his attitude in videos, also bringing up politics in discussion of games tends to rub a bunch of people the wrong way. IIRC he Got a lot of flak for his Fallout review in general.
Personally think he's a fine chap and liked his LISA analysis.
(Shaun's better though)
He made a bad video about Dark Souls 2 once
I googled 'Hbomberguy controversy' and was treated to this. Assess the validity etc. for yourself.

This is the weirdest "controversy" wikipedia section ive ever read.
I'm sorry this had to happen to you @Chryseus2 I hope you recover.
that only rubs idiots the wrong way. people who think games should be apolitical are chuds who are too dumb to realise all their favourite games and animes are extremely political
Not really dude
even if their favourite games aren't political (show me any aaa game and i'll find you a political statement or ideology behind it), video games are art, art is political. it's mostly white dudes & teenagers who have not really been affected by politics and therefore have been afforded the privilege to pay less attention to politics. i bet anyone who wants politics kept outta their games probably still really likes bioshock.
You didn't say political, you said "extremely political"
arguing about my use of language rather than the point i was making to seems like a really disingenuous diversion tactic aimed at discounting an entire point or argument because i said a wrong word emphatically. my point is that most forms of art are political, and some people just don't realise, because they're not paying attention
