you can change the title to "Despite Putin's swagger, LITERALLY EVERYTHING ABOUT RUSSIA"
You can go even further "Depite Putin, Russia"
"Russia" might suffice. The contrast between Big Bad Vlad and the reality of Russia is well documented by now.
it does make you wonder if he's ever jealous of the fact that trump is an idiot but has the US military while he's a machevelian genius and has the russian military
The disaster that is Russia's navy shows to an extent, sanctions work.
Fucking weird headline, Yahoo.
Yeah, let's just remember that the last time the Russian army successfully standardized a new piece of equipment and fully removed whatever it was replacing was 1954.
If he was so smart he would have been able to modernize Russia by now, instead him and the oligarchy have burnt so many bridges and spent so much money on useless dream projects instead of fixing up Russia's infrastructure and economy.
if Putin were really that smart he could just try being good at his job
Even Putin couldn't right the ship that was the Russian economy, they were literally 60 years behind the curve with everything in that country. Ya you're absolutely right about the oligarchs making it way way worse but Russia also has the problem of just being too damn big and spread out to even have an effective economy, and the need to maintain legacy industries like the asbestos mines or various specific factory towns also hampers that because the soviets were really bad at locating their industries near supply chains
I don't think invading a neighbouring country sparking massive sanctions and trashing relationships with neutral countries is machiavellian
invading a neighbouring country that is also building engines for your warships
On phone the title is cut off so it says "Despite Putin's swagger, Russia struggles"
machiavellian in the way russia conducts its operations in europe, also I didn't say that made him a military genius
He managed to get away with it relatively lightly, the last time Russia did something like this a World War started.
Let's not forget he also shot down a civilian airliner in the airspace of that neighboring country, killing almost 300 NATO citizens, and faced no military retaliation whatsoever.
Russian navy has pretty much always been dogshit
Russia has been focusing their naval modernisation in the north, for the arctic. 32 Icebreakers, 4 times more than the next country with an arctic border.
Just because thier warm water fleet is pants, don't discount them yet. They only have one official warm water port, why would they focus thier efforts there?
Russia knows the next big enterprise are the resources under the fast melting arctic ice sheet and have been planning to be able to dominate there for years.
Not supporting, just pointing out why this article is kind of looking the wrong way.
That would be the ultimate power move, encouraging global warming so you can seize the goodies that come from ti.
I doubt that they're actually thinking that far ahead, and if there's anything worth grabbing up there I can't imagine the west not just forcing them to share (if they don't just take it all)
considering how reluctant the west appears to be in regards to any significant confrontation with russia, i doubt anything of the sort would happen, to be honest.
I was under the impression that the west just didn't have much to gain by confronting Russia.
Do you think they're actually frightened? I thought that they were mostly just avoiding a very expensive, but winnable war.
the question, is would they have more to gain in such a hypothetical scenario by confrontation than they'd lose by undergoing through that much effort in what would likely be open warfare? (because how else is the west going to force russia to do anything of the sort?)
The funny thing about the sanctions is that my overtly pro-Russia brother changes his opinion on them depending on what RT and Sputnik say. And that can change multiply times within a single month. One weekend he comes over to our house for lunch and he tells us about how the west should lift their sanctions against Russia because they are hurting poor old people somewhere in Siberia and they are now so poor that they are dying of starvation and then the next week, he comes over and tells us about how the western sanctions are stupid and pointless and that they should be lifted, because Russia is a mighty country and can survive on its own with its own resources and food production .
Literally:
"Omg, stop sanctioning Russia, it's only hurting its poor people and they don't deserve it, don't be so cruel, lift the sanctions pls!"
or
"LOL, sanctions are pointless, Russia is rich and can survive forever even with the sanctions in place, the west is wasting their time! They should just lift the sanctions and stop embarrasing themselves!"
I can only guess what he might say if he hears about the navy's struggle to modernize. Probably frequent western sabotage or somehow the Ukraine's involved.
Hasn't their last (and only) air carrier recently fallen/slid off the dry dock during maintenance/repair thus fucking it up completely?
So based on this thread, Russia may be cleverly orchestrating the West to ruin with strategic online manipulations and gain territory through sheer intimidation, but its economy and country are still in low conditions and it's hardly a wonder militarily besides the nuke stash.
Considering America's status of hugeass overfunded military run by the most dysfunctional government leadership in living memory, I guess the world stage is balanced out. Not to mention our patriotic racist gun-toting rednecks are balanced out by the jolly, carefree slavs who do stuff like this:

And yes I'm talking sterotypes, my apologies, but my point is Russia seems like a nice enough place even though political culture is a negative influence. That's pretty much the US's problem anyways, so a good reminder that our countries are more alike than most would admit.
That is a pretty shallow (and inaccurate) assessment of the state of affairs in the US and Russia.
Ultimately he has some of the same character flaws as Trump or else he wouldn't have tried to turn his country into a shitty dictatorship and take shortcuts to make them appear strong.
I know, I apologize. I just wanted to post something optimistic, I guess.... and share that video 'cause it feels kinda amusingly wholesome to me.
The latest weapons systems are much more complex than the quite modern late-Soviet models and even weapons that appeared in the troops in the 1990s. Russia is preparing for a change of generations of military equipment and creates a platform for technological and technical breakthrough. It takes time.
Wait so their navy isn’t just Putin in a swimsuit?
