Up to a third of the $6.7bn (£5.2bn) in Pentagon funds Donald Trump has identified to spend on a US-Mexico border wall has already been spent, officials have revealed.
During his emergency powers declaration last month, the US president announced he would divert billions of dollars from other Department of Defense projects towards the wall, in
order to circumvent Congress.
It included $3.6bn (£2.8bn) in unspent military construction money, as well as $2.5bn (£1.9bn) in counterdrug funds and $600m (£462m) from an asset forfeiture account – the latter
two not dependent on the emergency delaration.
But a spokesperson for the House appropriations committee told the Congressional Quartely (CQ) magazine that only $85m (£65m) remains in the counterdrug account, wiping out
more than $2.4bn Mr Trump intended for the wall.
In order to recoup that money, the Pentagon is planning to redirect money from other programmes in order to bring the counterdrug account back up to $2.5bn, so that Mr Trump can
then move it again into border wall funding. Any repurposing of funds by the Pentagon, however, would require authorisation from the leaders of the four congressional committees
which oversee the department.
Glad to see a third of the wall has already been made! Maga!

I'm going to paint a butt, with sharts.
That's uh, meta, I guess.
builds 72-foot wall.
Does not account for 66-foot hill.
Smh, can't even get it right in a delusional fantasy.

Should the Pentagon move the money without congressional approval, it would upset years of precedent and add to already tense pushback from lawmakers over the plan.
what tense pushback? the majority of congress already shows it doesn't care
Guess people can do whatever they want in the name of Trump and national emergencies now, Trump's destroying the government of the United States.
Alas, the real problem of government projects inevitably rears it's head.
Since when has a government project gone under-budget?
So how much would the wall cost in total? I'm seeing estimates ranging anywhere from $12b, to $25b and as high as $40b.
It looks decently likely that both houses of Congress will vote to overturn the emergency, but Trump will veto it
mexican drug cartels if you're paying attention now would be the time to bring more drugs in when the budget for interdiction has been raided by an idiot to build a wall where nobody bothers with smuggling drugs
It's a government project, so take your favorite projection and double it. And then it is spearheaded by Trump who will embezzle at least another 50% on top of that.
If it somehow actually happens, expect it to cost around as much as a small nation's GNP, with a handful of investors miraculously becoming billionaires in a few short years.
So the wall is like a foot tall on top of that hill then?
