• Unable to update my dedicated GMOD server.

I made a GMOD server for me and a small friend group a couple months ago, and apparently GMOD updated recently and I didn't realize. When I went to play, I of course got the "this server is running an outdated version" etc. error. When I went to find out how to update, I got the whole 'force_install_dir, app_update 4020 validate' etc, but upon logging in, directing it to the right folder, and telling it to update, it gives me the error "ERROR! Failed to install app '4020' (Disk write failure)" I tried turning off read only on all the files, and that didn't work, but all the other options I saw were specifically NOT for servers, and usually involved reinstalling the game, something which i'm not very interested in doing. Am I missing something?
Kinda asspulling a solution here, but did you try running SteamCMD as administrator?
Maybe you don't have permissions for that folder, try another one. Or maybe you're low on disk space.
This was actually the solution. No idea why it wouldn't say anything about permissions but whatever works I guess.
Well, as unfortunate as it is to say, I've ran into this issue before myself, with it "updating" but not actually seeming to do anything. The only thing I could do was reinstall my server into another folder, delete the old one after I made sure everything was in place, and then give the new folder the same name as the old folder. It's a huge pain, but if you back up your (non gma/workshop) addons, your cfg files, and any other custom lua or settings related files, it should be fine. Apparently this is a a recurring issue with using force_install_dir, but alas, I run more than one server on my own home hosted hardware with more than one filebase so using the same default install path just wasn't going to work.
