Cuomo is a giant shit-for-brains dickhead but its true that it's too early to see how well Cortez will fare as a politician
“It’s early yet to find out what she actually produces,” Cuomo told reporters
And he's right. She's fantastic, and her attitude is exactly what we need, it'll also very likely be a positive influence, but really, she's JUST started
Cuomo dismissed the idea that Ocasio-Cortez could be pushing his party too far to the left, pointing to progressive initiatives that had found favor with voters such as New York’s $15 minimum wage, paid family leave and marriage equality.
He's not even dismissing her as just being too left either
All in all, yes I do believe she will be helpful, but this is very much standard political "Wait and see". She's already been very much a good influence and got issues out there loudly, but how much of an affect will that be as opposed to an establishment democrat? That I think should be the real question.
What he said is absolutely true. She's a freshman congresswoman and her time in office can be measured in weeks, still.
However, the context and who said it makes it rather demeaning.
This is classic Cuomo. Say something that's agreeable at face value but act like a patronizing little weasel. It's no secret that he doesn't like AOC, especially after all the fellating he did to try and get Amazon's new HQ built in New York.
Legalize weed already
Has she even presented any legislation yet?
I'm having a hard time seeing how acknowledging that she's literal _weeks_ into her term and thus hasn't really done much to be judged by is somehow shitty.
Crafting legislation takes time. She's introduced a resolution outlining the Green New Deal, which is still in committee. It's shitty because Cuomo is most certainly not a political ally of AOC or the left, and is pooh-poohing her career when it's hardly even started. She's done plenty to be judged by. Her voice alone on popular issues of our time is sorely needed. Politics is more than just bills. It's about driving the national conversation and building the political capital and will to get legislation passed in the first place, and she's certainly helping massively in that respect.
The article makes it seem like he was asked about her performance as a House member so far:
“It’s early yet to find out what she actually produces,” Cuomo told reporters after a news conference in Washington in which he argued for Congress to reverse a provision in the new federal tax code that disproportionately hurts his constituents.
He didn't go out and release a statement about AOC saying "yeah she ain't done shit fuck her". He was asked about her performance, and said "it's too early to say".
How is that unreasonable????
Like I said, her "performance" encompasses more than just what bills she's introducing. He could have said something like "her enthusiasm and voice on important issues are a huge help in energizing young voters with her massive following and I look forward to see what she does." He could have said a lot of things. He basically gave a non-answer, because, like I said, he is no friend to her and chose a politically safe answer. It's not unreasonable, it's just a showing of whose side Cuomo's on.
Would it not be intellectually dishonest for him to give an answer he didn't agree with for the sake of political points?
If he doesn't feel he knows enough about AOC to say how she's done -- and considering that public officials should be held to a higher standard for such determinations than Jim Morrison of Facepunch, that doesn't seem unreasonable -- then one would hope he says "it's too early to say".
He went on to defend her later in the article.
But that's the thing, he didn't not say it for political points, he didn't say it because he doesn't agree with her. I'm saying that Cuomo gave a weaselly answer and he doesn't like her. That's it. I never said it was unreasonable, I said it showed what side he was on. They disagree massively on economics, like on the Amazon deal. The only reason he shied away from blaming her for that is because it's not a good political move for a Democratic governor to attack one of his own representatives.
