Its within our power as a species to eradicate measles forever, and it wouldn't even cost that much to do it, compared to the cost of wars or things like Trump's wall. Plus we'd never have to spend another penny on vaccines once the disease was gone. We essentially keep it around by choice.
2 million people were dying each year from smallpox in 1959, the year we decided we'd had enough of this dude. Twenty years later the disease was consigned to the history books.

All first world countries should ban international travel, along with many other privileges, if you're not up to date with inoculations. Not all counties have access to vaccinations, making certain diseases that our nations wouldn't have a problem with, because most of the population aren't incompetent fuckheads and they actually get their shots, a much larger and potentially harmful issue.
Anti-vax supporters can get particularly frustrating when they aren't buying into the autism paranoia; some people probably think a little disease "builds character", creates 'nautral' immunity, is just a fact of life, or at worse, "survival of the fittest" or some pseudo Darwinism bullshit.
Either way, I blame first-world dimwits who grow up in modern isolated relief from these diseases and think "I never had a problem, so no one else does," and think humanity's good to go without strange chemicals being injected into their babies.
to be fair not many kids are vaccinated to smallpox anymore because we actually eradicated it, the only places it still exists is in lab closets and some theorize permafrost

I wonder when we'll start needing vax records on visas and passports, this is getting ridiculous. Though it's hard to trust vaccines from developing countries.
Bear in mind however its impossible to get travel insurance without having the necessary vaccinations so they'll be required to pay for any medical treatment or repatriation out of their own pocket.
We are literally reverting several hundred years, to the era of colonialism wiping out entire communities, because of this shit. Isn't that utterly spinechilling?
