Female trans prisoner forced to live and shower with men in North Carolina

A transgender woman convicted of insurance fraud is serving time at a men's prison in North Carolina despite her repeated requests to transfer to women's housing.
Kanautica Zayre-Brown, 37, is believed to be the state's only post-operative transgender prisoner, The News and Observer reported Wednesday.
Despite a policy adopted by North Carolina’s Department of Public Safety entitling transgender inmates to possible services, including gender-appropriate housing, Zayre-Brown’s request for housing in a women’s prison has so far been denied.
The state has continued to recognize her as a man and by her birth name, Kevin Chestnut, which she legally changed.
Imprisoned as a habitual felon in 2017, Zayre-Brown is serving up to nine years and 11 months in Harnett Correctional.
Harnett has eight housing units divided into 29 separate dormitories that house nearly 1,000 male inmates.
Even though she has breasts and completed sex reassignment surgery before her imprisonment, Zayre-Brown showers and changes in front of male inmates.
She says she constantly fears being assaulted.
Zayre-Brown told The News and Observer that she understands that she broke the law and is rightfully imprisoned, but all she wants is fairness.
She said has requested women’s underwear, bras, hygiene and shoes, which should be allowed under the change in policy.
Department of Public Safety spokesman Jerry Higgins says the case is under review.
Transgender woman with breasts, no male genitalia forced to live..
Emphasis mine, and changed the title because I thought it was garbage.
Also, this isn't really an isolated incident. This is really common in America and it's a huge safety and human rights concern.
Humanity trying its hardest as usual to piss on the very concept of human rights with its prison system on the daily, I see.
It's the modern day institution of slavery.
That's the point. A lot of states south of the Mason-Dixon line (California too) need that prison labor for the economy.
what's even the point of legally changing one's name when the state can arbitrarily choose which one to use?
On this note, it's very wrong of the article to post her deadname. There's no reason to do that and it's very humiliating.
Sad thing is, many people out there will arbitrarily decide that she deserves being raped or beaten in a men's prison because she's trans.
Is a trans woman a man thats now a woman or a woman thats now a man?
An easy way to remember this is that trans people really don't want to be called by the gender they used to be. So whether they're a trans man or trans woman, that gender refers to their new one. Trans people want very little to do with their birth gender.
The problem with prison stems deeper and harsher into the system than stuff like this. It's an oppressive entity at its core.
Easiest way imo is to just think of trans- like an adjective. Tall woman, tired woman, transwoman, all refer to people who identify as women
That is the entire point of the American justice system.
Wonder if my boy Roy can do anything about this
holy fuck this entire article skeeves me out, misgendering her constantly, saying "born a man," et cetera, constantly bringing up her deadname
AKA how not to do trans journalism
I don't care how many crimes she commits or how bad they are, you don't do that shit
Slight correction: Needed.
In todayland machines in general are more cost effective than bleeding, beating, feeding, and keeping prisoners. At this point its state sponsored sadism rather than the lifeblood of the southern economy like it was a hundred years ago.
Let's not kid ourselves and just say "its all the prison system!"
American society is systemically transphobic. Prison system is fucked, but its a symptom of the country's transphobia, to boot.
Because transgender people weren't in public knowledge till like 1992 at the earliest. It will take decades.
You know, I love my state. It has great people in it, the sights are gorgeous, the beaches are nice.
But if you ask any single person in NC what they think about our government, and the related judicial system (prisons included) they will give you the same answer: it's a dog shit dumpster fire.
No one voted for this admin here. As evidenced by the guy who cheated his way in and is going through a revote, the jerrymandered districts, and a lot of major cities straight up ignoring what the state government has to say about anything, it's time to change up NC.
This shit is fucking barbaric.
based on ratings, a couple of lurkers seem to think this is a good thing. I'm curious why they think that.
they don't know how to argue their views so they just rate "snowflake" that sounds even vaguely accepting of trans people
trust me guys its an effective argument tactic it does not at all make them look stupid
This is utterly fucking disgusting.
What reasons could it be outside the old reliable 'I'm afraid of things I don't understand'?
So wouldn't this person be transsexual rather than transgender?
I mean their sex has physically been changed which would in turn no longer make them transgender as now their sex matches their gender. I mean it is often called "gender affirming surgery". That is the point.

GDPR has fucked me over here boys, can someone link a repost of the article / send me a screenshot of it?
You cant change your sex with surgery until we can modify genes.
Considering the names I'm seeing, it's not actually surprising. Most of them had a long history of being transphobic asshats when transphobia was still acceptable on Facepunch. They just know they'll get banned for posting about it now and refuse to accept that they're objectively wrong though so they just rate threads like this negatively to get a rise out of people.
but are't they called sex-change operations/sex-reassignment surgery?
Call it what you want, but at its core it is cosmetic surgery. It doesn't change your chromosomes or give you functioning reproductive organs of the opposite sex.
That word has fallen significantly out of favor and is considered by some to be offensive. Transgender still applies after surgeries
cosmetic my ass lol, I need that shit man, my dick causes me insane amounts of stress, I'm gonna chop it right fucking off if I can't get surgery
A lot of trans people would rather never have had that past is the thing, like since they weren't the right gender (for them) before they transition, I know I don't like people calling me my deadname, I don't like people bringing up the past because I was, well, a guy, the shame isn't in the transition really mate.
