Other than this being a massive violation of human rights and dignity, I hope the Chinese government enjoys effectively neutering their economy when they'll be preventing many millions of people from participating in it due to this bullshit. Oh! Also, Pence says something sensible for once in his miserable, spineless life.
Human rights activists warn the system is too rigid and may lead to people being unfairly blacklisted without their knowledge, while US vice-president Mike Pence last year denounced it as “an Orwellian system premised on controlling virtually every facet of human life”.
This is happening much faster than I'm comfortable with. The hell is China going to look like in 20 years?
Welcome. Welcome to the city of Beijing. You have chosen, or been chosen, to relocate to one of our finest blossoming urban centers. We thought so much of Beijing that we elected to strengthen our administration here in our capital, so diligently maintained by the efforts of the Most Glorious Party. We've been proud to call Beijing our home. And so, whether you're here to stay or passing through on your way to parts unknown, welcome to Beijing. It's safer here.
god its gonna suck to be one of them
I wonder if it’s possible to get the lowest social credit. What happens when you’re at the bottom but not dead or in jail
If we needed to draw a line between when reality became a dystopian reality, here wouldn't be a bad place.
Worst case scenario is that this backfires for the party and have people turn against them, if walking you dog without a leash is enough to get fucked by the system then way to many people will get fucked by small shit.
I imagine it's similar to what happens if you end up on the sex offender registry in the US: good luck finding a job or a place to live that isn't shitty bottom of the barrel tier

no fucking way is anyone going to turn against them when people who speak out go missing and are never seen again.
In addition to being a drain on the economy, I could easily see a situation where it's harder for people with poor social credit to get more credit and easier for them to lose it. Especially if you're already poor. I saw a video about the social credit system and it showed people openly submitting bribes in an apparently officially sanctioned way to improve their credit. This system is going to make a lot more poverty.
Straight up cyberpunk dystopia.
go re-watch that episode of black mirror to get a taste of 2040 china
The plan is to fully release the system throughout China by 2020, which is less than 10 months from now. It will go extremely fast.
This has to be mostly people inside major cities, the social credit system hasn't been implemented outside of Tier 1 and maybe Tier 2 cities. What a shit show, the system has draconian rules and at the same time its implementation is terrible.
It's worse than the sex registry. Someone on the sex offender registry will have a hard life but they can at least try to appeal to sympathy (or religion, Christianity is all about redemption) and for lesser offenses many states will eventually remove you from the list. The Chinese credit system is designed so that once you're at the bottom, you stay at the bottom, and you have people terrified of associating or even being in proximity of someone with a low score because it carries the implication that they themselves might see their own score harmed by collateral effect.
Brazil, the movie not the country.

Richer Pyongyang. It's probably going to look even worse when Xi dies. The power struggle is going to massively fuck up the nation.
The sad thing is, they're already there. They've been ""convicing"" rural folk to move into the big cities.
After xi dies the mandate of heaven the communist party has worked so hard to repress will destroy whatever progress they have made in yet another brutal, pointless, and bloody civil war. To elaborate Xi has more or less consolidated most of the power in the chinese government to the presidential position. When he inevitably dies There will be a power vacuum that i don't think even his assumed successor Chen Miner will be able to stop. When he leaves all it will take is a few outside powers throwing bribes and dividing the government into factions to get a good civil war going. This is why you don't consolidate power into one position, because when that position is up for grabs everyone scrambles for it and human decency goes out the window.
I would imagine though that a lot of these people actually enjoy the quite and beautiful environment vs being in a shit-hole that is city-life. So I couldn't really see their convincing working on them at all (well maybe a few).
Rural land can not be privately owned In China, only urban land. This is how they can compel them.
FUCK THE WEST FOR THEIR CONTINUED COMPLICITY
Is America supposed to bomb Beijing and pull a reverse Fallout-backstory or something? Yeah, not buying from China would be a good start, but the rest of the world's supply chains aren't equipped to deal with a market without China, exactly as China planned. International diplomacy is more complicated than rocket science, because at least with rocket science there comes a point where you can calculate whether the rocket will blow up or break apart in any given scenario.
The Republic of China will rise again!
Dammit China, Black Mirror is a warning not a guideline
God damn china you have a good thing going ever since you've opened your markets, why you gonna ruin it with this shit
Sorry if this is off the actual topic here, but it's related to how fucked this are in China. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/247204/b7e0120c-a11b-49ca-9af1-f2c56b61e8e4/1551402821240.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/247204/f3d7ac79-f43b-4d3a-8aee-53661c194799/1544632319415.jpg
