You really think a first strike would hit population centers? Then what? Our missile fields in the Dakotas, Montana and Wyoming unleash a nuclear firestorm on Russia completely destroying their country. Not to mention our strategic assets around the world (oceans).
This is posturing. It makes sense for Russian politics and Trump is a cuck so Putin knows he doesn't have to worry for 2 more years.
Trump may be a 'cuck', but how the hell do you even respond to such a posturing? Like, honestly, how does one go about answering something like that?
Have the CIA change Putin's workstation, personal PC, personal cell, work cell and burner cell wallpapers to a 'We have you by the short and curlies, Vlad. XOXOXO CIA' image.

Russia comes out and shakes its fist at the US ever few months unveiling a "A new Super Weapon that will bring America/Europe/Etc to its knees." It is always the same, they show a prototype with completely outrageous specs, they may do a controlled test on TV, and then it fades into obsurcity and is never heard about again. Repeat. Pointing at the US/Europe is an easy to way to distract the populace from all the on-going corruption and HIV epidemic. I'd be more worried about India and Pakistan going to war than the Russians or US doing anything more than scoffing at each other.
And as a friendly reminder, we where providing the Russians aid up until 2012. Until Putin decided to kick them out of the country.

Don't be intimidated. Putin is notorious for putting on power shows. He just wants to be seen as powerful and in control to intimidate the masses and gain respect of others in power.

The thing is it's not meant to make an impression on you. It's meant to make an impression on stupid people who care more about appearing to be strong than actually being strong. Beating your chest and yelling that you're the largest ape tends to work, look at people who think that Trump is a strong leader as a classic example.
I'm not entirely sure why power plays like this are even a thing.
Surely it's not an outwards show of power if said play would ultimately cause the end of your world as well as your potential enemies?
It doesn't make sense because you assume Putin is a rational smart person. In reality he's dumb as bricks - look at his biography for christ's sake, he literally is nothing but a very lucky gopnik. Putin is stupid, that's like Russia's best
kept state secret. And unlike Trump he isn't kept in check by state institutions, PR specialists and whatever or whoever the fuck and doesn't use Twitter. God help us if someone will teach Putin to use social networks one day.

Awareness of saber-rattling aside, even the idea of this popping off is terrifying. I can't imagine what it was like back when bomb shelters and drills were a thing.
