Very quickly, dedicated handheld consoles will phase out of this industry forever, allowing phones to take over.
Switch is a Hybrid so I won't count that
Really hope not, mobile is a shit platform for gaming. Unfortunately it's a pretty good platform for slot machines
idk I never use it that way. I'm too terrified of breaking it to actually bring it anywhere
Is it sad to say I've always wanted a Vita but stayed away mainly because of the memes about its failure?
It seems like a nifty upgrade to the PSP, which I still use to this day.
I'm surprised it lasted this long.
This must be the result of the SouljaGame's overwhelming sales.
It really is, especially when it comes to homebrew. The ePSP emulator on the Vita is pretty much a straight upgrade to a real psp.
bad ones with no effort put into maybe
which IIRC was what happened with the Vita
Meanwhile, Nintendo prints money
Vita was a legit fantastic handheld
I'll admit, I've thought of picking up an old used one off Ebay.
I've been carrying my switch daily in my backpack from the moment I have bought it back in november. Just get a screen protector and official protective case, that's all you need to not be afraid of taking it with you.
Also afraid of having it stolen. Also I really don't go anywhere I'd want to take a switch with me. I don't think I'd have an opportunity to play it anywhere outside
Sayonara, Vita. The one of Sony's two Gen8 systems I actually sorta cared about.
You tried something different and wrapped it up in a nice package, but it just sadly didn't work out.
IMO a handheld should fit in a pocket and the switch is just too big. It’s a gaming tablet.
i got a vita on launch. I still get a bit sad whenever i pass by it in the drawer it's been sitting in and thinking what could have been.
Now's a good time to get one
They've been fully cracked and there's a detailed guide on installing hacks on them, then you get a brilliant little emulation station that is essentially a fully functional 6.61 CFW PSP with the added ability to play all Vita games. Even if you don't want to pirate, I'd still recommend hacking it because then you can buy and use a nifty little adapter to turn the cartridge slot into a MicroSD slot and put huge memory cards in there without paying out the ass for Sony's proprietary shit
The fact that I had thought it had already ended speaks volumes to the Vita.
Which is sad, because the original PSP was one of the best handhelds out there.
Hmm gonna have to try and get a second-hand one before they become more pricey. I had a Vita for a while but tradded it back because there were no games for it. I can see it being an awesome emulation machine though.
The proprietary storage, along with a lack of worthwhile games, killed this device imo
I'd say there was a good amount of worthwhile games, they just weren't advertised and almost all weren't exclusive to the platform. Looking through the list of exclusives on wikipedia, there's only three I'd really call worth playing, Wipeout 2048, Touch My Katamari and Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme VS-Force, everything else good on the platform is a port or was developed alongside a PS3/4 version.
I love my Vita so much. I don't play it as much anymore, but it's everything I wanted in the successor to the PSP, aside from the stupid memory card situation and Sony USA's lack of any dedication to the platform when it came to Marketing. Persona 4 Golden alone got hundreds of hours of play and it's my favorite machine to play some of my PS1 classics.
I'm very thankful Nintendo is still invested in the handheld market. I almost always use my Switch as a handheld. Got to be like an 70%/30% split for me.
Best Persona 4 machine I've ever owned.
Sony at any point could of switched to Microsd card and probably would of done big numbers but nah, let's just restrict the market as hard as possible.
Really, as long as the handheld is more powerful than phones and is well prices, it should do just fine. I believe the Vita would have done great provided Sony didn't mishandle the damn thing.
I still think the Vita would have more interest if it doubled as a phone since the first model supported 3G features. Even if it was stuck with an in-house OS over Android.
imo handheld is done. Switch is unique because it is THE Nintendo console. There is no way any dedicated handheld can match what powerful phone provides: almost everything. Many companies who used to develop for handhelds now have full fledged divisions making mobile games. That market is huge (almost 3x of home consoles), massive library, exploitable and accessible for both consumer and game makers. Both Vita and 3DS discontinued production and it is apparent that nobody is in a hurry to refill that gap.
used it for my emails for three+ months when I lost my phone
Okay, but there is no way that powerful phone can match what any dedicated handled provides: physical controls.
(Gamepad support on android is a joke, and you need root to map the controls to touchscreen so I'm not counting it)
Maybe one day a sequel to this will be made:
