Ending them with South Korea and starting them with North Korea in secret probably.
I'd love to be optimistic about this but I feel like we're just going to end up abandoning South Korea instead.
So what did we get in return for ending these? At the very least we should have gotten concessions from NK, rather than just deciding to end it.
Furthermore, this puts US influence in a weaker position in this region, opening opportunities for China and Russia to exploit.
I'm not entirely opposed to ending them, but I think we should consider the consequences and remember why they were there in the first place.
Having South Korea as an ally is plenty of influence. These drills were needless shows of force. We would never tolerate Chinese drills in Cuba, for example.
Might as well just cut to the chase and give fatty the entire peninsula.
Trump is an idiot, this will be temporary.
Drills are the difference between professional soldiers and an armed rabble. Drills are something you stop doing if you want your country's soldiers to die because they haven't had any practice at their job defending against a very real and potential threat.
I'm all for ending military dickwaving, but these are practical scenarios meant to give troops first hand experience doing real military maneuvers in the field so if shit hits the fan they will be able to defend their homes.
We're abandoning our ally and as long as NK is run by an unstable dictator this is a bad thing.
it'll resume in 2021.
We're still at war with North Korea. As long as there is a chance of hostilities, we should be prepared. The deal should be: We'll formally end the Korean War, and halt large-scale exercises with SK and NK must also pull back X number of troops and artillery from the DMZ verifiable through satellite images and UN inspectors.
I wonder if public opinion differs on abandonment of South Korean defenses vs. Israeli Defenses.
Plenty of people (myself included) are fine fucking off from Israel, despite it's biggest threats having nuclear capabilities, but wouldn't want to fuck off from South Korean, despite its biggest threat also probably having nuclear capabilities
Well, more of we're technically still at war with them since 1953; because of the two ceasefire deals the Korean Armistice Agreement and Panmunjom Declaration are still effect. Which, I quickly see why the US government are doing right now, spite Trump backing out their recent US-North Korea summit days ago.
Yeah it's a "technically at war" but could quickly turn back to "at war" if someone accidentally misfires in the wrong direction.
Trump getting puppeted by dictators again, or is playing into Kim's hands more "4d chess"
Clearly it's 6D underwater Settlers of Catan
To be fair, those two giant exercises were shitshows. It's better to do multiple smaller exercises. Trust me, anyone who has been stationed in Korea can tell you that one, there are a gazillion training exercises that you do during the year regardless, and two, that Ulchi Freedom Guardian, Key Resolve, and Foal Eagle had the tendency to just be a ton of garrison games that didn't really contribute more to overall readiness than normal exercises. It was mostly for officers to look good. They started virtualizing a lot of one of those already, and it worked out pretty good and saved time and resources. I'm all for that. We aren't abandoning them, guys.
NK is apparently going to move forces away from the south korean border, with those movements to be verified by satellite IMINT and UN inspectors
The conspiracy theorist in me feels like this is a long calculated plan by China to increase their influence over democratic Asian countries.
