She's right, Democratic voters are increasingly intolerant of centrist politicians. Which is good, because American centrism is basically far right by any reasonable scale.
There's some shitty incumbents in super blue districts, primary them.
What was the republican amendment they voted in favour of?
Tracking undocumented immigrants who buy guns
The progressive hotshot from the Bronx warned moderate members of her party Thursday they’ll be “on a list” for primary challenges in 2020 if they keep voting with Republicans, according to a person familiar with the matter.
This could very much be sensationalism by the author of the article, but since when did it become taboo for members of two different parties to put aside party politics, and vote together in the public interest? American politics is absolutely fucked. And often Americans who realise that it’s fucked are (ironically) inadvertently enabling it, by pushing the ‘us versus them’ mentality.
I am aware in this case that those particular Democrats supported a Republican amendment to a gun control bill that requires authorities be alerted if an undocumented immigrant tries to buy a gun. But that part quoted above, when applied broadly, is really disgusting.
A socialist has nothing to offer but sectarianism. What a surprise.
what do you expect AOC to do, lie down and take what the status-quo dems want and not even try to campaign to replace them?
It's because there's a split in the Democratic party, by most Western standards the Democrats are center to center-right and the Republicans are center-right to far-right. But since the late 2000's (not a coincidence the recession, and at the same time our generation matured) a center-left voice has been getting louder and demanding that we move away from the center-right position because we don't need 2 right-wing parties. Bernie was an outlier, so much that he wasn't part of the Democratic Party, and AOC is a young new voice in the party, and there are others like them gaining popularity. But a lot of Democrats are still clinging to the old ways and rejecting progressiveness in favor of their older neoliberal ideals, which favour the current economic system despite glaring faults, those faults which led directly to the formation of a progressive wing of the party in the first place.
You know damn well she’s not a socialist. Quit being a baby.
Great more Party First, Country second crap.
Republican rule is terrible for the country though. They really are just that fucked.
No actually, more the opposite
If circumstances were normal, bipartisanship would be acceptable. But while the Republicans held the House they turned their noses up at it, and the GOP is an organized criminal syndicate at this point. So voting with them on most things is fucking bad.
...fighting with your own party is party first?
Jeez. The GOP can’t even let a simple gun control bill pass without slipping some of that casual xenophobia into it. It really doesn’t surprise me that politics are just a huge war zone now. Recent events have basically crumpled up the rule book and thrown it clean out the window, with one side proving they can pretty much get away with whatever they want.
Also, I had no idea AOL was still around. I swore they vanished forever ago.
Socialism advocates working class control of the means of production.
Welfare and enviormentalism is not socialism.
This video kinda shows the average Republican, possibly on acid. I fucking love the video though. Keep watching - it starts getting good quickly and then gets completely insane later.
To be fair, before the 90's (third way) or so European social democratic politicians always referred to themselves as 'socialists'
If anything you could argue that European social democrats have forgotten what it means
Can I just point out that the title of this thread/article is extremely misleading? It seems to imply that AOC is making a list of enemies or something, when that's not even remotely close to what she's saying. The source itself doesn't even have a direct quote from AOC, just hearsay from another unrelated person. 10/10 reporting.
It's called clickbait, even if it's not completely obvious here, and why I trust news sources less and less. Cuz you know, it's baiting people (like me) to say something snippy like "Didn't the Nazis and soviets do the same thing?" but I didn't because I had the feeling that there was more given the comments.
Corbin Trent, the communications director for Ocasio-Cortez, said the 29-year-old New York congresswoman lobbed the veiled threat during a closed-door caucus meeting while criticizing the 26 centrist Democrats who voted in favor of adding a Republican amendment to the gun control bill passed by the House this week.
“She said they’re putting themselves on a list for progressive challenges in the primaries,” Trent told the Daily News.
????
I meant that the title seems to imply AOC herself is personally making a list of enemies or something, when her actual quote just pertains to the general state of politics right now.
IMO the idea that "AOC herself is peronally making a list of enemies" is so absurd of an idea that I read the title and just assumed she was warning on behalf of others. Context clues and all that.
Alexandria has basically become a beacon of hope for our generation and the one after it. She is everything most of us had come to believe is impossible in politics, someone young and from closer to the ground like us. And the fact she can stand up to everyone in there and they can't knock her down is even more inspiring, seeing it as a symbol of our generation standing its ground against older generations and wealthier, more powerful forces that would rather grind us to dust. Honestly I could see her becoming someone's running mate and eventually a presidential candidate herself. That would be absolutely ideal, even if it's probably at least a decade away.
So making people who don't read the article look dumb?
The article is really trying to make you think she is though, and tbh it's believeable enough in the Trump era of politics because you know he has a personally written list of enemies. This is the opening line of the article for godsake:
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is making a list and checking it twice.
As someone who spends time in online left circles the reality is obvious to me, but maybe not so much older people or people who aren't incredibly online. Basically: centrism has (rightfully) been branded the enemy by progressives, and anyone who demonstrates themselves as centrism will now instantly lose themselves the progressive vote just as if they were Republican. It's good that the focus is shfiting to practised ideology and not teams tbh. The struggle of Red vs Blue or Labour vs Tory or Remain vs Leave just seems to unimportant in the face of pending economic and climate crises. If you're here to help then come in, and if not then fuck off. Regardless of whether or not you claim to be on the same team as me.
Advice someone on the outside looking in, it baffles me anyone not in their base would vote GOP when they’re all openly about screwing you out of money, and are vastly shitty people across the board
AOC continually creeping me out.
Don't like smart leading women I guess?
