Few automakers have staked the reputation of their brands on safety quite the way Volvo has. Several years ago, Volvo's President Håkan Samuelsson announced that the company was enacting a plan called Vision 2020—building cars so safe that by 2020 no one is killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo. On Monday, the company revealed the latest part of this plan. From next year, all new Volvos (beginning with the 2021 model year) will be limited to 112mph (180km/h).
"Because of our research we know where the problem areas are when it comes to ending serious injuries and fatalities in our cars. And while a speed limitation is not a cure-all, it’s worth doing if we can even save one life," Samuelsson said in a press release. "We want to start a conversation about whether car makers have the right or maybe even an obligation to install technology in cars that changes their driver's behaviour, to tackle things like speeding, intoxication or distraction. We don’t have a firm answer to this question, but believe we should take leadership in the discussion and be a pioneer."
As a kid I actually thought that there's no way everyday cars would let you drive as fast as you wanted.
This should be the standard.
Honestly it makes sense. Much beyond 100MPH driving requires a whole hell of a lot more skill and reaction ability than most people have. The sheer amount of distance you will move before you can make a corrective action, the amount of time you have to make corrective actions, is pretty small.
I wonder if it relates to this:
All New Cars To Have Speed Limiters Fitted, Rules European Parli..
Fair enough. These cars aren't supposed to be on a track anyway, so there's very little reason why they should go any faster.
I can't imagine a standard civilian ever having a reason to go that fast. Curb idiots.
What a shit idea. What if I'm being chased by a peregrine falcon, with a diving speed of 242 miles per hour? There should be a mandated minimum speed to prevent peregrine falcon attacks.
Stick a JATO to the back like that one Darwin Award winner who ended up embedded in the side of a mountain
This won't solve much.
When someone really wants to disable anything in a car, they always find a way to bypass that, and even magicaly pull out even more power, from a simple ECU remap.
I find this kind of dumb though. Well, yes and no...
180km/h is still quite a lot, the difference between that and, say, 200 or 220 isn't much, and nobody's gonna go that fast in a place where they could legit cause accidents. Someone doing a speed like that in a city for example, where it makes all the sense to actually limit speeds, would probably lose control waaay before that speed.
In a highway though, the only way I could see someone getting into an accident at that speed would be with plain lack of experience, faulty vehicle, or bad assessment of situations.
But lets go off the assumption that you actually have enough experience not to panic when you see a car merging, and also that your vehicle isn't faulty whatsoever.
If you were to crash on a mostly deserted highway, aka not during rush hour or anything of the sort, its because you made the bad choice of speed, and thats on you. No speed limiting will ever fix that.
You're obviously not gonna speed during rush hour or when there are a lot of cars on the road, because there just isn't any space to do so, and if you are that much of an idiot to do that, I can assure you they won't be doing that on a Volvo, and if they were, the limiter would be long gone by then.
Honestly? The way I see it, theres a lack of good choices when it comes to speeding. That isn't a good choice by itself, no, but it honestly baffles me how people speed but don't recognize when to stop. Like, don't speed in cities, for obvious reasons, for example.
I feel dangerous going 80 I cannot imagine going past 100 on a normal road.
I mean, okay. The average car really won't go over 80 anyway, and Volvo doesn't have any sports cars anymore.
Gm has been doing this as long as I can remember, most of their cars are limited to ~95. Your average car/truck really shits the bed any faster than that, they just aren't designed for it. There's a reason sports cars and race cars have strong suspension with very little slop.
I've had to car-pool with a guy who drove 100MPH.
At night.
On highways known to have deer.
It's not fun.
I was concerned for a bit because they had Polestar versions of their cars but it looks like those don't really exist anymore.
I don't mind this for everyday boring cars but just imagine buying a Corvette or Mustang and being stopped at 112 on a track.
The autobahn is pretty damn deadly compared to speed-limited highways.
People who want speed should use dedicated tracks for that, rather than let a false sense of control endanger the lives of people who simply want to get around safely.
Tracks aren't meant for speed, except for maybe a few, but it isn't quite the same.
The thing about autobahns is that I guess people just figure "everyone can go whatever speed they like", so everyone does, when they really shouldn't.
Meanwhile, limited highways keep most people in line. They could go fast, safely even, but they won't because its the law.
I first read it as 112km/h and I was like, "wtf? I go faster than that on literally all the highways" but ~180km/h seems very fair and way above what most people will drive in their lifetime.
180km/h is way too fast. I'd say 130 is all you ever need in daily life.
You are from germany, the land of autobahns.
130 is the recommended speed, isn't it? Now you want to overtake someone, go to the other row, press on the gas pedal and boop, you don't move. What do you do now? If a speed missile comes behind you doing 180km/h and you are stuck in front of it, you are now dangerous because you disabled the flow of traffic. Having been on the autobahn a few times, there is always someone in the left lane faster than you.
But yeah, max I have been in a car is ~200km/h, during a snowfall of all things, don't really trust that dude that much now. 180km/h seems like a sensible limitation. Our minivan got to around that speed on the autobahn, but that's a heavy, non-sporty car that isn't meant to faster.
If any car needs this, it's German cars. People who drive German cars are dickholes
If Volvo were dead serious about safety, they wouldn’t replace most of the dash with a distracting, fuck-off huge infotainment system in their cars.
Speed limiters are actually incredibly dangerous because they tend to intensify pack build ups in general which increases the chances of car accidents.
Why is the guy not roleplaying NASCAR is the danger in this scenario? I would think rocket man back there would be the one who's dangerous, not everyone else because they're in his way.
If he crashes into you and the cops come, I don't think "this guy didn't move out of the way so I hit him" is going to be a star defense.
ah the old "we actually have to do this but we're convincing you we did this from the bottom of our hearts" routine.
I was thinking about this the other day. Almost all of my annoyances while commuting by car are caused by some dickhead speeding in the overtaking lane. For example I'm going 70, approaching a lorry in the left lane going 50mph or whatever, so I look if it's safe to overtake him but of course I can't because there's a dingus coming towards me at 85, so I have to slow down to 50 as he passes and then pull back up to 70 and go round.
And let me tell ya, in a 65hp ford fiesta from 2002 that shit isn't fun. It got me thinking about why cars are allowed to exceed the speed limit, but then I remembered people go to track days so I kinda left it there.
Mount Rushmore, literally
Probably depends how fast they're going.
If you're going 80, and some guy slogs in your lane going 20, they've fucked the situation, not the speeder.
8 out of 10 times I see someone driving like an absolute idiot on the road it's always a Volkswagen car. Coincidence? I think not.
In a couple decades when autonomous vehicles are the norm, even required, I'm convinced people will be baffled by the idea that people were ever relied upon to maintain vehicles at speeds in excess of even 60 mph.
I think you mean any car that is expensive or has a specific cult following, because there are also Tesla dick holes, Prius dick holes, whatever dick holes
Whats the difference between a BMW and a Porcupine
With a porcupine, the pricks are on the outside
