This whole debate is a joke. Why cant he just wear makeup? People shouldn't immediately jump to blackface if someone who is a professional actor is playing a black role sincerely with no malicious intent.
Its stupid because its literally what acting is about, being someone you're not.
they should get alfonso ribeiro instead
At least he was blue enough to be the Genie

I wish he'd just stop acting and ruining films tbh
I loved him in iRobot, I loved him in Legend. He can be a great actor. The only issue is that he's become honestly a joke and uses the same exact tone he does for every film.
I still have a DVD copy of this movie, a fucking DVD.
Sometimes it's literally just due to lack of options not "colourism". People keep saying "get idris Elba" as if they can just kidnap Idris Elba and force him to play the role. I mean I'd say Idris also looks nothing like Richard Williams either even if their skin tone is closer, but did they consider that maybe Idris has no interest in the role?
He was pretty good in Ali and while it's not technicly a biopic 6 Degrees of Seperation is one of my favorite films.
smurf face is a hate crime against humanity!
IDK, I think it's fine that he has a consistent acting tone. It's no different to Jim Carrey and the way he carries himself in most of his roles. I'd say it's more of a casting issue, it's pretty obvious that Will Smith has a tone that he consistently uses which is why he should be picked for suitable roles instead of something that doesn't fit that tone.
If Will Smith isn't black enough, just get Robert Downey Jr. instead

While this is true, its very unfortunate that the film industry have literally no understanding of this at all
Idunno he was pretty good in Concussion
Read the title as Robin Williams, remembered that he's playing Genie, started reading that he's playing him in a biopic and started losing my shit.
These people obsessed with making black people as dark as they can possibly be sort of forget that light skinned black people... exist?
Jaden Smith was really good in that film where he acted with his dad though. After Earth. It was great to see how he could be so versatile in one movie. One minute he is playing a stroke victim and the next minute a bad actor.
I mean they should definitely cast someone more accurate. "Dark skin" black and "light skin" black is definitely a real thing. I looked up Richard Williams and will Smith looks nothing like him.
From what I have understood, according to some black friends, dark skin black isn't cast as often as it should be, because it's generally viewed that lighter skin black is more attractive. This is definitely a real stigma from my understanding. Any black facepunchers able to clarify?
I will admit that I find lighter shades of black just as attractive sexually as Caucasians but that I don't tend to find darker skin black as attractive. I have no idea if this is biological or if it's some deep-seated issues I need to work on though.
Its not that; historically, even lighter skinned African Americans have been treated better than darker skinned.
The best example of the kind side punching I can figure out how to explain is the old school vehement hatred between the Irish and Italians. Its that kind of goofy.
calm down son, some of us still have manual black and white projectors to play our original 1800s film prints of fresh prince.
This sentiment was echoed by many others, who felt that giving the part to a dark-skinned actor would "make more sense".
You what now?
He's only light-dark, he needs to be dark-dark.
I'm pretty sure everyone owned a copy of iRobot, Meet the Parents and AVP on DVD
Can't play a role because your skin's not the right shade, eh?
Totally not going to blow up in the face of the people arguing for it this time in other debates.
Now get Scarlett Johansson to play Serena.
Okay admittedly, I’ve never heard of Richard Williams the tennis coach, I’ve only ever heard of Richard Williams the animator. So when I read that title, my immediate though was “Wait, what? Isn’t Richard Williams white?”. But then I looked it up and went “Ohhhhhh, okay. Now it makes sense.”
