Move over comic books, time to buy up every single manga and anime film rights.
Please no. They will absolutely fail to capture the tone of 79
Huh, this guy has a lot of interesting stuff under his belt.
I'm still not going to hold my breath, though.
This is still an incredibly easy thing to severely fuck up in terms of story.
ok Hollywood I have to ask. Why do you insist on making live action versions of every IP when 99% of it is going to be CGI anyway? Just make it an animated movie at that point. Or even better stop making movies based off mange and anime IPs. You aren't good at making them.
people know Gundam Wing in the US as the defacto Gundam seines,
So, a bunch of pretty teen boys in a mildly stuffy romantic-feeling war with a small side of lightly salted politics. Eeehh....
That'd fit Hollywood more, but if this is UC Gundam, which is kinda what everything's been implying so far, that is certainly not the tone it needs.
Not that I think Wing is bad, not by a long shot. It's just pretty far removed from a lot of the rest of the franchise in its own way, and isn't what they should be aiming for if they're doing anything related to UC.
Is this even going to be an adaptation of 0079 or a new story? All the news I've seen on this are incredibly vague on the subject matter, which is important here because there are 13+ different Gundam universes, and tons of stories in each universe. Just that "It's a live-action Gundam movie", which can be literally anything.
I'm glad comic book writers are coming more into their own as writers for visual media. Vaughn's Y the Last Man is getting a TV series after all.
Here's the thing though, he does incredible character interactions. He doesn't do world building all that well though (I'm looking at you Y). I feel like Gundam could probably work with just stellar characters.
This really. You can get an okay director like Guy Ritchie, but the part the director has to work with is the writer. This is why movies like Alitia: Battle Angel is doing fine (I said fine, not amazing) but movies like GITS and Transformers fucking 5: The Last Knight failed because the directors and writers were not in their elements. I have a feeling if given the time and effort Alita got, I think Mobile Suit Gundam will do fine.
Then again...
While the OG series did make it to the US, Gundam Wing was a HIT with mainstream anime fans who never got a chance to see the original. I think the only people who have were major anime fans who imported when it was around or people who saw the beam sabers and went "This looks like Star Wars!" because beam sabers and space wizards
Worse case scenario would be to have it be Gundam, but the plot and characters will revolve around hot senator chicks making affairs with cute boys that happen to pilot giant mechs.
Hollywood presents: Mobile Suit: Gundam: But it's actually Gundam Wing!
This is what you wanted right anime fans?
Is this the long waited successor to the masterpiece that is G-Saviour?
Just go all in, give us Mobile Fighter G

This will 100% turn into a "Hurr robots are cool" story rather than a "War is bad"
