But not Diablo 2, the significantly better sequel, bummer.
"And it won't be the last. GOG has already announced that it will follow this Diablo launch with future re-releases of the first two WarCraft RTS games' original files."
Yeah man.
This will save GoG, these games hold some super serious nostalgia value.
I notice that they only state the first two, what with the Warcraft III full-price remaster inbound.
I'm curious how they handled the version with fixes and HD resolutions support. Knowing GOG, though, I hope this will be a perfect solution to experience classic Diablo on modern PCs.
No Hellfire expansion pack, it was deveoped without consulting with original creators of Diablo and released by different publisher (Sierra) and it's not canon (so no running in Bovine Armor, sorry).
No information about games available in Blizz's store, wonder if they need more time for negotiations or something.
I loved the Warcraft era of RTSs because of the scenario editors.
You can't even buy the original Diablo on Battle.net only Diablo 2 and 3 (obv.) because the last time I checked there were some odd (and really old) security issues with the games online feature.
Battle.net is kinda alive thanks to this. Managed to actually get 4 people in my game and we got down through the caves. Amazing fun.
I think it still has those terrible online security issues.
I heard a streamer say yesterday that at some point Blizzard made some changes to their servers which broke online multiplayer and never bothered to fix it. I guess this is why.
I hope the old Warcrafts are next.
Diablo 1 is a legitimately good game and it saddens me to see that you can finally actually buy the damn thing to play and use with some of the really good recent mods and people just say
"meh it's not D2"
my pc must be blessed because I can still run original D1 and WC2 just fine
I hope this greatly helps GOG profits.
Diablo is free though? Why would anyone spend money on abandonware? I already own it on disc so this already doesn't interest me but I mean, come on GOG/Blizz.
GOG preconfigures all of the DOSBox shit for you, making it a turnkey solution for people who don't want to put up with the downside of retro PC gaming, compatibility issues. They also typically include manuals, soundtracks, and other materials when available.
For some games, this saves a HUGE amount of work in finding patches from archives of mirrors of dead official links to get a game to not crash because it refuses to believe monitors can go above 800x600, and in other games it's no big fucking deal because DOSBox just automagically handles that game perfectly already.
Also is not abandonware if the company is selling the game again
And it won't be the last. GOG has already announced that it will follow this Diablo launch with future re-releases of the first two WarCraft RTS games' original files.
I've been waiting... I've been waiting so long and its finally happening.
Everyone always talks about how Warcraft III brings back nostalgia, and while I certainly agree, the early Warcrafts (Tides and Dark Portal in particular) are likely the first real "adult" PC games I ever played. I'm excited as hell to finally have the chance to revisit them without having to jump through technical hoops.
I get that compatibility can be an issue at times, Diablo 1 has never caused any headaches for me personally so I'm not sure the struggles anyone might be having trying to run it on modern systems.
True, but however it was abandonware for over a decade. Selling it now out of the blue isn't a bad thing necessarily, we all know they're building up to the Diablo 2 remaster. Any attention towards the Diablo franchise is basically going to be good attention. I just find it odd and out of character to sell a game that used to be bundled for free in Battle Chests of Diablo 2, and at one point offered as a free download on their website. Diablo 1 didn't even use CD Keys that's how much they were giving it away. If they put Diablo 2 up on GOG I wouldn't even bat an eye, i'd support their decision 100% even though their own Battlenet service tracks your CD keys on their store already. I only have a problem with this particular move because it's Diablo 1. A game that did so poorly they literally gave it away the second Diablo 2 hit store shelves and now suddenly for seemingly no reason they want to make money off of it again.
not sure what you mean by saying they gave it away for free.
diablo 1 was released back when cd-keys weren't really used for pc games. diablo 2 released when cd-keys were the norm.
you'd expect something called the DIABLO BATTLE CHEST would include both diablo games yea? it's not called the diablo 2 bundle.
Please release Blackthorne, The Lost Vikings, and Rock 'n' Roll racing on GOG too please.
"Works on my machine"
Some people want support handled for them and spending a few dollars is worth the convenience for them. That's GOG's whole original business model, before they started carrying contemporary titles as well as retro games.
You're not their primary target customer and that's fine.
They gave it away for free when Diablo 2 was released. There was no way to buy Diablo 1 standalone anymore as Diablo 2 was bundled with it and a Prima Guide. Blizzard basically took this high selling PC game and used it to help increase the value of the Battle Chest, and it worked. I never would have played Diablo 1 had it not been included with my copy of the Battle Chest all those years ago. It may have been a high selling gaming during it's time, but once Diablo 2 was released, Diablo 1 took a back seat almost immediately. Then after some time they stopped bundling both it and the Prima guide with Diablo 2 making the value and price of the Battle Chest drop significantly. Afterwards it was impossible to buy a copy of Diablo 1 through retail. Shortly after it was made available for free on Blizzard's website much in the same way Warcraft 1 was.
Blizzard is well within their rights to reactivate their IP and make money off it again, I'm not saying it isn't. I was hoping that they would just make it available on their Battlenet app when Diablo 2 remaster happens.
I remember being able to modify items and their properties in multiplayer and force the game to drop them as those modified files. I had a sorcerer build with like near infinite damage
Just give me the option to enable all quests in a single game, never liked missing half of them because the game picks between 2-3 options.
^ There's a mod that does that
You could download those games on BattleNet for free though.
Those are just the games though. You need DOSBox, and in and in Rock 'n' Roll's case, a SNES Emulator.
GOG can offer those games for free too, just without he hassle of having to constantly set them up every time you play.
