hey remember that "humanitarian aid" that totally wasn't guns? guess where it is now!
Just what America does
From what I'm gauging from the article, these soldiers are Venezuelans that defected in recent years from the crisis? It doesn't outright say it though.
It says they were led by a Venezuelan general though, so it's probably safe to assume.
>Led by retired General Cliver Alcala, who has been living in Colombia, they were going to drive back the Venezuelan national guardsmen blocking the aid on the other side. The plan was stopped by the Colombian government, which learned of it late and feared violent clashes at a highly public event it promised would be peaceful.
It also says that the Columbia killed the plan which is something that would not have stopped it in the past.
There is also growing frustration that Guido is losing momentum and not following through on promises.
He is best known for his involvement in the Iran-Contra scandal
On January 25, 2019, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo appointed Abrams as the United States' Special Representative for Venezuela.
You've got to be shitting me, this is amazing.
He was pardoned by George HW Bush on the advice of current Attorney General William Barr.
Does it matter where they came from if the US's chief person on the crisis is the man behind Iran Contra as well as other similar actions?
Yeah because making shit up for political brownie points is disgusting.
If you're still on the fence about Venezuela it is really important that you read up on Elliot Abrams, or this great questioning from Ilhan Omar

This is a total false dichotomy. The US doesn’t give a fuck about Venezuelans or the crimes against humanity. They care about getting an American friendly government. I want to see Maduro gone but I don’t want to see a US intervention.
I'll take seeing Maduro gone over spitting in the eye of the U.S.
Maybe you haven't been paying attention but no US intervention over the past 50 years has reduced crimes against humanity in any given country. Even in Pakistan, a country the US is allied with, civilians are killed on a regular basis from CIA and pentagon drone strikes.
I'd rather leave the Venezualans to have a civil war than see US intervention, which always follows with a civil war anyway.

"quick"
The difference here is Venezuela literally has a congress and president ready to go. They have those things because those used to be the legitimate government until Maduro decided to strip them of their power so he could make his own Marudo government.
Its easy to compare this to a point and time when the region of South America was firmly within American power.
That's not the case, as has been shown several times in the last 10 years with places like Syria; China and Russia are happily and wilingly throwing money and arms at these regimes to either prolong or protect their own interests and neither of them have a glowing representation either. On top of that, Columbia and Brazil engaged this incident first and have more boots on the ground than the Americans do. By the by; the Columbian Civil War only just finished happening about 2 to 3 years ago and that was far more painful for them to begin with. A sudden influx of refugees for both Brazil and Columbia if Venezuela breaks into a civil War would push Columbia over the edge because its still in a very precarious position.
Its easy to bleat and scream America, while China and Russia; one of whom is committing a genocide in their own homeland as we speak. The other has been intentionally causing chaos and disruption because their leader is still butthurt over the collapse of the Soviet Union. In this context; the United States is probably the only player with an semblance of a 1/4th decent goal.
This isn't a free pass to the US either though, as the entire community is watching them and if we do in fact start sending shit in and they find out; our already trampled reputation will only get worse.
