https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/entertainment/news/us-band-twenty-one-pilots-balaclava-belfast-gig-glamorised-terrorism-fumes-tuv-37878483.html An American band has been accused of glamorising terrorism after a performer wore a balaclava and a burning car was used as a prop for their Belfast gig. Twenty One Pilots performed at the SSE Arena on Saturday as part of the Bandito Tour, which is in promotion of their fifth album, Trench. However, the burning car prop and the donning of a balaclava have been condemned as "inappropriate" due to the history of the Troubles. TUV leader Jim Allister hit out at Twenty One Pilots, claiming that the "imagery was inappropriate". "Balaclavas are the stock-in-trade images of terrorism in this part of the world, so to don them at this sort of event inevitably has the consequence of sanitising or glamorising that with which they are associated in this part of the world, namely terrorism," he said. "Whatever they thought they were doing, this is hardly the sort of imagery that Belfast needs. One 19-year-old fan who attended the concert told the Belfast Telegraph she didn't feel the band had acted "in a malicious way", but added that "maybe they should have done a wee bit of research" ahead of the gig.
But the parasite said NO! Your art will serve the state! Your ideals must serve the people!
Twenty One Pilots has always been edgy garbage, I doubt it was malicious, they're just trash. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/133677/bb78da43-1f35-48b5-b3de-fa1ab1d862db/image.png Here's them in 2014 performing. It's really nothing new.
Ah, great, totally worthless appeal-to-emotion bullshit. Can't have any art that is controversial in any way, everything must be sanitized and family-friendly always.
I love writing music but if there's a main reason I could never make it big, it's that I would hate how so many bands and artists have to do some pretentious shit on stage.
Yes truly your inability to handle pretentious shit like "wearing masks" is the reason you'll never make it big. Get over yourselves lol, countless musicians over the years have worn costumes and masks. If you don't like their music that's more than fine, but ironically all of you taking such an issue with the band doing whatever the fuck they want on stage are the ones being pretentious.
I said main reason I just couldn't take myself seriously. I am not very good with people.
Maybe they're just cold my dude
I am a musician as well and have dealt with self esteem issues in the past. I'm taking your posts to heart, and I'm here to tell you to shut the fuck up what you call "pretentious shit on stage" I would call performance art. but it's valid to see it as pretentious though, it's not for everybody. I disagree with you in the assertion that it is necessary for "making it big" some of the most influential and successful musicians in history have been total weirdos who either had 0 stage presence or simply had no talent outside of the studio. I'm not calling you a weirdo, just pointing out a fact you don't need to do on-stage performance art to be successful in music. performance art is a great thing, something a lot of people enjoy when it comes to live music. but not everybody "needs" it. your music should and will speak for itself. also... you don't need to be a wildly successful musician. right? we are musicians because we want to share what we feel within us, in the form of music. the important part about being a musician is sharing your creativity, it is about making an impact on people, and you don't need to "make it big" to have an impact. even if it's just a drop in the bucket, it's your drop in the bucket, and you've accomplished something. if you can get someone to feel something when they hear your music, you've made it. in conclusion, keep writing music and never feel like you have to make it big to be important.
Lemme back this up with Roy Orbison. The reason he famously wore such thick glasses was because he feared stage lights and large crowds, and he would stand there static and play for the entire gig, from start to finish, but he was an utterly electric perfomer regardless due to the sheer presence of his voice.
It's ok Dan love you regardless
It's an American band on a Bandito tour with a burning car and a mask, so the theme was probably supposed to be "heist" and just missed the mark due to where they were performing.
People who ski wear balaclavas. They are encouraging terrorism!!!
The ski mask has been a staple of twenty one pilot's stage culture. The band deals deeply with mental health issues and the problems life can throw you. Of course you can interpret stuff in multiple ways i feel the main thing people are missing is that the mask symbolizes having to put on a mask to the outside world. With the latest tour & album there's a backstory of a character called clancy who has to escape from a dystopian village called Dema. They go deep on the symbolism of Dema being controlled by priests who want you to believe exactly what they say and preach or you will be "punished." Of course clancy escapes and meets up with a resistance have yellow duct tape on their clothes. Of course the connection is always there to be made that "wow they are portraying stuff that the terrorists we've dealt with did" but that's just dumbing it down so much that the core messages and values the band wants to promote is lost. Twenty One Pilots obviously doesn't promote terrorism. In fact while their fans can be a bit much at times, the band itself gives a voice to those who deal struggles with depression and other mental health issues on a daily basis. Really I just think this reaction is a bit dumb, because sure i'm sure it offends some people but so does everything in the right setting. They didn't change anything in their stage routine just to piss off ireland.
I know its mentioned in article, but its the traditional unionist voice (TUV) complaining about this. They split from the DUP to form an even more hard-line Ulster Unionist party who oppose the peace process and power sharing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5PI7k_ZiQ0 This got the BBC a record number of complaints back in the day
sorry to bump this but i took my nephew to see these guys and it was a blast. it is a decent record too. they're not edgy , it's just a bit of fun.. this northern irish mp needs to move on with his life, nothing 21 pilots did musically have any resemblance to the troubles..
