• What does tongue rhyme with?

For my whole life I thought that everybody says "tongue" in the same why (it rhymes with hung) but lately I've been to a few towns where they pronounce it "tong" (like curling tongs). These people always insist their pronunciation is normal, and searching online it appears that more people say it the tong way than I expected. I'd like to know your opinions and whether you're also surprised to know other people say it differently. Agree: Tongue rhymes with hung and stung. Disagree: Tongue rhymes with long and dong.
Wait, people pronounce it as tung? Am I a cretin for pronouncing it like long?
my tongue lounged from nearly scrounging around.
hello from New England always been 'tung' for me
my midlands mother says "tongue" as "tong", whereas virtually everyone I know in Scotland says "tongue" as "tung".
Rhymes with bung and dung
Does it not rhyme with lunge or plunge? "I take the plunge and laterally lunge my sweaty tongue."
i'm from manchester i say tung
I have never in my life heard anyone pronounce it as tong. There's a slight o sound, but it's not at all like tongs.
That would imply you're pronouncing it like "tunje." But nobody here is as bad as someone I once knew, native English speaker in the US their whole life, who pronounced tongue as "tongew" Like, wat
I smoke too much, surely there is one among you who can spare a young lung? Bonus points if you are well hung and high-strung.

god no. i'd have to turn myself into the police if i pronounced it 'jif', because that is fucking criminal.
Suck on my lung with your sweaty tongue?
Are you.. surprised at the fact that people have different accents than you? I guess that's more normal in a small country like Norway with a lot of regional dialects. Some dialects can differ, being just miles apart from each other, and individual cities, towns or even small villages can have their own set of unique words or expressions
Lung, Dung, Strung
It's not really a matter of accents, it's that people saying "tong" are using a completely different phoneme rather than the same phoneme in a different accent. I'm currently working in a town of tongers who believe that it's the correct and regular pronunciation around the world, and they act like I'm daft for suggesting otherwise.
