Can't believe I'm reinstalling an Ion Storm game that isn't Deus Ex or Thief: Deadly Shadows
Who would have thought that I would actually want to play Daikatana.
Feels like Daikatana would have been received a lot better in its day if it had not started with the abominably shitty first chapter.
my first experience with this game was with the 1.3 patch and, honestly, i fell in love with it. it's genuinely one of my favourite games of all time. i highly suggest at least giving it a shot with the patch if you have hesitated, if anything to see what Romero was like without having been tamed by the rest of staff.
Dude was overly ambitious combined with not thinking things and ideas through (nor having the time and grace to do so), but Ion Storm also bit off more than they could chew and royally fucked themselves on Daikatana and an RTS series, Dominion, shortly beforehand. The whole development is on everyone's shoulders, and Romero waltzed on in with an inflated ego thinking he was a rock star of gaming that could do no wrong. Boy did that fall apart.
i worded that quite poorly, sorry, i did mean that the game was in part a mess due to him being un-restrained. that lack of restraint, while fostering beautiful worlds and fantastic ideas, also meant he bit off more than he could chew, leading to the many flaws the game has. i still like it a lot despite those flaws, and honestly, there's a certain charm to that jankieness for me.
