The days I was active? Back before constant updates meant new mods were crashing all the time? Early introductions of Sweps and Stools, no wiremod?
Don't you mean jbmod?
Personally for me was around late 2009/early 2010 till 2014-15
I was involved with the whole Gmod screenshots and comics back then, It was honestly the only reason i played gmod And i'm glad i did because i met some really great people whom i call friends.
Not sure what I'd consider a "golden age", but I do get a bit nostalgic for the Gmod 10.
2009-2014, without a shadow of doubt.
Back before every server became either TTT or DarkRP. Definitely had to be 2009-2014 if I'm going to be completely honest.
I still miss that sunny Saturday morning around April or May in 2014 where I woke up at 6 and began playing Extreme Football Throwdown. I woke up so early because I had a cold and migraine and my brain decided to wake up at that time.
GMod 10 times for sure
gmod 9
I would definitely say it coincides with The Orange Box dropping. At least it did for me...
Thanks for your opinions
gmod9
I've never really played the multiplayer much and most of my time spent in Garry's Mod was for the sole purpose of making screenshots, which was the reason why I even joined this forum in the first place.
I am pretty sure the golden age of the Garry's Mod screenshot section was 2009(I might be a bit biased because that was the year I joined)-2014. People slowly began to leave the section and then the forum altogether. We were still trying to hold it together somehow until Newpunch happened. Several people broke off and formed their own screenshot section on Metrocop forum, which is now closed. And then Garry decided to start merging all sorts of different sections because he hated the idea of megathreads. Back in that golden age, the section would have many threads with screenshots of varying quality but people still replied to them and provided constructive criticism. This section got completely axed and most threads here are now"help, garys mod no work, pls!".
But let's be honest, it wasn't all on Garry. We grew up. We got older. People found jobs or went to college/university. Some of us still find the time to make and post screenshots here, but it's definitely not what it used to be.
Oh, the nostalgia
Before literally every gamemode became DarkRP/based on DarkRP
toybox era
Gmod 12s old DarkRP but mostly the SeriousRP aspect where players genuinely cared about Roleplay through the pioneering days. Also the wrath of Drunken Combine which he may finally rest in peace.
End of Gmod 9 is where it took off.
Like a couple of you said before, starting from 2009 to (in my opinion) 2012 was the golden age if you ask me.
Back then communities were trying out new gamemodes and were pretty unique compared to the current landscape.
Besides that, the serverbrowser was just better. Sometimes I get a bit nostalgic when thinking back to those days actually (r.i.p. Ventmob)
Man do I miss Green Shift and Deception. Some of my favourite gamemodes Spy made for GMod 12.
Even though I started playing around late 2016, I never played multiplayer. I tried it once, heard all the glass in my house break(from the squeaky voices), and left forever. Now, I only play with friends. So, from what I've heard, Garry's Mod was the best around GMod 9. So yeah.
2007-2014 Back when you had gamemodes like This or This or This or This and the Community was much more active on Facepunch and honestly in my opinion there was such a vast amount of Gamemodes and alot of them pushed the boundries what was poissble, whereas the gamemodes nowadays is mostly just Roleplay also it was also the times where there was this Gmod machinima was released too and when the Youtube-Gmod movies took off.
Good times the Community was different too.
Summer of 2014 in the build community for me. Cre8ive was nearly impossible to join because it was almost always full, Draugen was active as ever, you even had a bunch of servers as alternatives to them which did get visited. I think one of em was called chronology build, later Vehicle Haven. The one that booted out Evil and/or Nightreaper who then proceeded to start Draugen. Genesis build was there too and for the first time, you had maps that could compete with carcon. Real Builders was a very well mannered server before it was taken over by cringekids, you had one called Ozonic which was led by some pretty talented polish E2 cracks. Starfall was the shit among coders, you had people like Jackpody and Meta building vehicles that seemed impossible to replicate for average builders. Shadowscion was all the rage for everyone interested in hologram mechs until Erza happened (the guy knows what I mean).
But all of those people moved on with their lives and either became less active or quit GMod entirely. Perhaps what I witnessed, was the last good moments the build community had.
since i started around 2010, i didn't really get to experience much before that. However, I really felt like it was a lot easier to get unique addons (and even gamemodes!) known before garrysmod 13, or at the least, i dont recall darkrp being a massive powerhouse back in those days (heck, i was mostly in sandbox anyway so i guess sandbox was a powerhouse? i wasnt realyl paying attention in this regard). I wish I learned Lua during those times. I'm lucky I am even able to develop for a server+gamemode that isnt rp and is rather unique with a constant but small playerbase. its not my own gamemode however. I usually prefer making something only the server i own has, so public addons havent been my desired plans.
Ive tried a few times making my own gamemodes which i was proud of and were new experiences garrys mod at this time doesn't have (or at the very least, not popular enough to register as existing). Sadly, most of them die out even with the help of the small community of players we have for our existing servers. (Mostly due to the players who play our current gamemode already are most of the playerbase on that game, and want to stay there).
No matter how new or in my opinion great the gamemode I make is, it isn't roleplay. Heck, the server+gamemode i am a developer for is lucky they even got regulars playing on it, but even so, its very small compared to everyone else. But it doesnt bother me as long as players play on it. I accept that the majority of garrysmod players nowadays want some sort of roleplay (or at the low end, ttt or the usual proven to be sucessful gamemodes like prophunt or murder). Trying to even branch for new game, in my experience, and im sure for almost everyone who tries to do the same, ends in disappointment.
Perhaps some players who create new games are fine if it their game lives for a couple weeks with small amounts of players. Unfortunately, I simply don't like the idea of spending decent amounts of time on a gamemode for it to be barely remembered or played in the end. Even some roleplay servers die out the same because its "not overly new and unique".
That's not to say roleplay servers dont die out either, they can die out simply by the amount of servers there are. I think new experiences in garrysmod are simple not valid goals anymore. I still keep trying every now and then when i get the mood to rework/create more gamemodes to eventually open up in the future (and in all cases so far, close within a month). Will it be successful? Probably not. If it is, is it fair? What about the other creators who got nothing?
roleplay itself isnt bad, but it does make me upset knowing that a huge shitton of server space on gmod is just roleplay. the whole "create what you want you create" kind of deal doesnt seem like it exists in current day like it did back in the day if we're just going to default to roleplay gamemodes. (But then again, you cant remove roleplay servers entirely either, i wouldnt be surprised if a large amount of players buying gmod now is because of the roleplay gamemodes. Perhaps me not finding roleplay having any value makes me biased, and roleplay is really "that great" but i cant see it, and im just butthurt instead.)
This is Facepunch, so it comes to no surprise for me that most vocal posters seem to be against the whole darkrp trend, but we're pretty small compared to what gmod actually is now. I even hear plenty of people complain on my servers im developing for about darkrp. "The vocal minority is the loudest" so to speak.
Unfortunately, i think no matter what the gmod devs do now, its far too late. A lot of players are already adjusted to roleplay, and anything you do wont help encourage them to try new experiences. (The recent update which apparently made emptier servers rank higher and "emptier servers load first" or something like that, sounded good on paper, but ive yet to actually see any difference with the server browser list since that update. Ive refreshed that master list a lot of times but it just appears the same to me. Perhaps im misreading the update entirely i dont really know)
This really isnt a post about the "golden age of gmod" anymore and it turned more into a rant. But, It does make me wish really bad that I learned Lua back before gmod 13 was a thing, maybe then i would have had a slightly more higher chance with everyone else's creations.
100% before the gmod 13 multiplayer menu was added. That literally destroyed the game for most small communities.
