Who is surprised? That would've been a terrible idea.
I've gone around corners and suddenly noticed a police car with his lights on, it's not fun hitting the brakes at 100KM/H to drop to 40
This doesn't seem that dissimilar from the laws here in Canada, except we're supposed to full stop
I had no idea this existed until a few months ago when a bunch of cars started slamming on the brakes in front of me in both lanes when approaching a cop car on the side of the road Seems pretty stupid and I hope it goes away
When Ive been out with SES and we have our lights on, most drivers don't seem to even pay attention/slow down to 40km/h...
Good idea in theory because we need to protect the emergency services who are out there. Just seemed to be poorly executed and communicated.
It’s a bit unnecessary because the principle already existed, for people to slow down when passing a pulled over emergency vehicle with their lights flashing. But rather than encouraging the principle by making more drivers aware of it, they made it a dumb rule, and so incidents like in the video are bound to happen.
Maybe it's different between VIC and NSW but I thought the idea was to slow down safely, not just slam on the brakes once you see the lights. Meaning if your view is obstructed and you have a fraction of a moment to react you just slow. What I mean is that I thought this rule WAS the principle to 'slow down' because people by default might not have been. I don't know though.
I’ll be honest - I completely forgot about this law.
