The fact that you had to differentiate it as "jif" gives you your answer
Hard R

It's obviously pronounced "heef." https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/210867/49041fb8-b8c1-468e-91bf-60da2d532a48/gila-monster_thumb.JPG

I say it spelled out (G.I.F.)

I would pronounce it with a hard "G". My reasoning is as follows: The only other words in the English that begins with "gif" and is reasonably common use are actually words that begin with "gift". Gift is pronounced with a hard "G". The abbreviation, "GIF", stands for Graphics Interchange Format. Graphics is pronounced with a hard "G". Similarly, "JPEG" stands for Joint Photography Experts Group, and both pronunciations use a hard "J". The use of a soft "G" generally comes from France or other "Romance origins", and neither "gift" nor "graphics" are from France. Since "gif" doesn't really have a prescribed pronunciation and its nearest word and roots come from languages where it would be pronounced with a hard "G", it's a little more consistent to just roll with the hard "G".
My reason: soft "g" sounds just roll off the tongue better.
If you say it with a j then you must say Jiraffe instead of Giraffe, and Jolden instead of Golden.
I say hard G But i've been saying soft g more to fuck with people too. It really doesn't matter.
Uh, how do you say Giraffe?
giraffics interchange format, obviously
jraphics interchange format
Gif like gift
I alternate between the two inconsistently

Hard G, because I'm not a savage animal.
it's pronounced gif, not gif
Jif. Just sounds nicer to me. Ultimately it's irrelevant as gif is a dying format; hell, the argument over it's pronunciation will probably outlast the format itself.
Yiff
I use both pronunciations interchangeably. Hard G is what I consider correct, though.
