Hey, been having continuous problems with Spotify where I'm unable to play songs anymore after updating to a newer version when it comes out, when I want to play music I get met with the "Spotify can't play this song right now. If you have the file on your computer you can import it." error. The only solution for me is to either roll back to an older version I have installed, or to delete the Spotify cache in appdata\Local. Both of which are temporary solutions as rolling back to an older version forces you to update to the latest version the next time you launch Spotify, deleting the cache doesn't always give you a permanent solution either because the same thing could happen again in the next update.
The only thing I can think of trying to do is to somehow block Spotify from forcing me to update, in addition that will let me roll back to older Spotify versions without being pestered by the "A new Spotify update is available" message popping up and making me have to update to the latest version the next time I launch Spotify. As for me I have actually attempted to block the updates by denying Spotify the permission to but it has no effect as it seems to allow it again by itself which is a massive pisstake in itself.
As most may already know and for those who might not know, I am using the desktop version of Spotify on a Windows 10 machine (with an AMD Ryzen 7 2700X @4GHz, 16GB Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR4 @3466MHz and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 @1733MHz). I am able to play Spotify through the web player and through the Windows 10 app but the latter is not installed nor do I want to move away from the desktop app.
If anyone here has any solutions, they would be much appreciated. Personally it's not the most urgent thing in the world but it would definitely help a lot so I don't have to worry about going through the hassle every update or two to get Spotify working again, cheers.
If you get the IP of the update server you can block it in your hosts file, see Blocking Websites Using the Windows Hosts File
The other thing with Spotify is that a lot of functions died with adblock/blocking spotify things in the hosts file. Might want to try the opposite first: unblock all spotify things in your hosts file, might fix the problem instead.
spotify web player still works. no bans for blocking ads yet either. it's faster too.
I heard about the ad blocking thing but I feel like it's an empty threat. I haven't been banned for having one running in the background yet and I'm using premium at the moment, I used to use EZBlocker when I had free Spotify.
It seems like I've been able to get my songs running fine again since I figured out I had left my Spotify folder as read-only since I had checked if it was actually on, so I turned it off and my music plays properly every launch now. I could probably still try some of the solutions above to try and stick with classic versions of Spotify but for now we'll see until the next update if something fucks up.
