An Upstate elementary schooler and her mother are challenging school officials in federal court after they said the student’s school barred her from publishing an essay about her
openly gay grandfather.
The assignment was to write an essay addressed to “society,” according to a lawsuit filed March 6 in U.S. District Court. The finished essays would then be combined and sent home
as a collection with fourth-graders at Anderson Mill Elementary School, which is a part of Spartanburg School District No. 6.
The 10-year-old, identified in the suit as “RRS,” authored an essay advocating for equal and humane treatment of LGBTQ-identifying people, such as her grandfather, a former drag
queen performer, said Columbia attorney Eric Poston, who is representing the student and her mother, Hannah Robertson, who both live in Spartanburg.
Anderson Mill Principal Elizabeth Foster, who is a named defendant in the suit, reviewed each of the essays and instructed the young girl’s teacher that the paper would not be
published by the school because “it was not an appropriate topic,” according to the complaint. Instead, the student was instructed to rewrite her essay to center around “bullying”
rather than LGBTQ inclusion.

The fucking irony. She should publish it online.
That school, or at least that principal is so fucked lol Jesus christ that's one hell of a case.
Get their ass, kid
I hate when LGBTQ issues are deemed 'inappropriate' in a school setting. You might be able to get away with keeping that 'icky sexuality stuff' away from the education system back in the 90s, but the LGBTQ scene has evolved so much since then and a big part of what allows disinfo to be spread around so easily is denying these basic topics from the education system.
It really, really bothers me. There should be very few topics inappropriate for education, and there should be no topics that are inappropriate for education that pertain to a persons individual development.
Most American school teachers in that area are Christian ergo it's intolerable for them.
Well, you see, if we taught people gay people exist then they might form their own opinions on the matter before their parents can hammer the blind hatred into them.

The kid should write about how the LGBTQ+ community is constantly bullied.
Sounds like that's exactly what they were trying to do.
Glad that they're calling an infraction on freedom of speech. US schools should proudly stand by the first amendment, even if it offends you - that's the fucking point of it.
When you dont educate people on a topic it becomes an unknown. Humans tend to fear the unkniwn and unfamiliar.

That's just codeword for "my ancient book says it's bad so you can't do it because it opresses me!"
Actually being someone who worked as a teacher in the South Carolina school system it's not that it's the teachers, but rather the district/administrators telling you that you have to adhere to school policies, which includes "lets hide the fact LGBTQ people exist."
Hopefully if it gets to court they don’t get a bigoted judge in the area as well. Unfortunately I don’t have too much optimism about this case considering past rulings where judges ruled that schools can trump freedom of expression if they find it to be disruptive.
Well some teachers are just assholes.
Good fucking job doing this to the girl writing about her grandfather who is an attorney!
She should just write about how the principal is bullying her grandfather for his sexuality.
That's basically what's happening.
