He died on Saturday night, Dale’s live bassist, Sam Bolle, confirmed to the Guardian. Born Richard Anthony Monsour in May 1937, Dale developed his distinctive sound by adding to instrumental rock influences from his Middle Eastern heritage, along with a “wet” reverb sound and his rapid alternative picking style. You know, come to think of it, that is a weird-ass guitar tone in the opening to Misirlou and yet it made his version so instantly recognizable. Rest in piece, big man.
i didn't know he was of middle eastern descent. that tone makes so much more sense now
You'd be hard pressed to find an individual who's brought such an influential style to the table with his music as Dick Dale. Though I personally think his popular perception as "the Pulp Fiction theme guy" did more harm than good; let's not forget that Dick was still touring live in his old age, likely up to the day of his death. The title may be worn out in this day and age, but in the truest sense, this man was an absolute legend. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvROdFAWE5c&feature=youtu.be&t=117
I was just learning how to play Misirlou today, he really was a great guitarist. Unique tone and the fact that he was a lefty but didn't flip the strings, so he basically played upside down left handed.
So does the chord progression.
Miserlou is originally from the Eastern Mediterranean and its earliest recording is from 1927. Dick Dale's is absolutely a classic, and he had a LOT of amazing songs. A bunch are his own versions of folk songs such as with Miserlou. Doesn't take away from any of his talent though, just I think adds more context to it
Don't forget Disney had Dick Dale make the original on-ride audio for Space Mountain (in Disneyland) that ran from 1996 to 2003: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mp7pfxecxW8
