Today at GDC, we unveiled Oculus Rift S—a new VR headset that combines the convenience of built-in Oculus Insight tracking technology with the full power of your
PC. Built on the Rift platform, Rift S gives gamers and tech enthusiasts access to the most immersive content that VR has to offer,
and it’s launching in Spring 2019 for $399 USD.
-Higher resolution and vastly improved optics
-Inside out tracking
-Same price as current Rift (399)
-Same system requirements

Shame about the 80hz refresh rate, but I guess it might still be within a comfortable framerate.
Guess some corners had to be cut to keep the price lower and keeping the performance requirements about the same.
They seem to explain it here:

This is the true next gen VR experience:

Same price? Fucking A
Interesting, I just got a Rift + Touch not too long ago for just under $400CAD. Thinking I still made the right choice though, and maybe in a few years when this drops in price too I can upgrade
Inside out tracking still has a ways to come imo, I much prefer my fixed sensor setup.
If that’s 399 including the controllers I’m fucking sold immediately on next possible salary payout. I’ve used my Oculus extensively ever since I got it 2 years ago, the only issue I’ve had is with the tracking stations since my apartment is fairly small and they’re a pain to constantly recalibrate. So, basically, hell yeah to this, man.
This is a welcome upgrade but VR is boring as hell imo, especially for someone like me that gets motion sickness easily. All locomotive games are off the table. Only teleport and games like vr boxing for me.
Rift S also lacks mechanical adjustment for interpupillary distance (IPD) — something that was included on the original headset.
Oh boy, not the best thing to get rid of unless you 100% sure your optics will work fine for everyone without any adjustment.
I'm just waiting on the Oculus Rift X now.
Eh, seems like a downgrade for everything but the higher resolution and better lenses.
This wouldn't be considered 'next gen' of VR surely? Why does it feel like that's taking a long time
the built-in speakers are a downgrade too. the S uses oculus go style speakers while the CV1 used rebranded Koss Porta pros
they're moving it to a software based IPD adjustment system but personally i'm not so sure how that's going to compare to actually moving the lenses
Might be time to eBay the ol' Vive.
Theirs indicators that Valve is working on real Gen2 to go with the Knuckles, I'm thinking this is the low cost alternative, as Vive will be the high cost.
I think i'll wait to see what Valve has in store
