Really excited to jump back into this when the update drops. The limited content of the game at launch was a bummer, but just sailing around with friends and creating your own fun was great.
Had so many goofy and memorable experiences in this game, I can't help but love it.
Played sea of thieves last night afte rnit playing since launch. The game is so much better it’s crazy, I had a blast.
To someone who stopped playing before the first expansion came out, what exactly is there to change up the monotony of gathering chests for no reason other than cosmetics?
Is there a story at all? Roleplay? Have they added any kind of character customization beyond the random-pick?
Does death and losing treasure mean anything other than superficial loss yet?
The first major update was the Hungering Deep, namely adding a temporary boss that was later added into the game as a regular recurring boss encounter that can happen anytime in the sea, versus the Megalodon.
After this, they started doing a few smaller bi-weekly updates, adding things like a series of jumping-puzzle thrones with achievements and limited time awards, and a new permanent type of skeleton that spawns with a gunpowder keg, and finally rare statues that can spawn underwater/near the coast that drop a gem you can trade in to any company for a large amount of rep and gold.
They also added in cannons/capstan/wheel customizations at some point, I forget when.
Then their second major update was released: Cursed Sails, introducing NPC Skeleton Ships in a limited time event where they were ""besieging the outposts"" (not really, they weren't anywhere near) in large battles in clear bits of sea. This also introduced alliances, where you can ally with another ship and get a portion of what they trade in. Furthermore, this introduced the Brigantine, a three-man ship.
A small update later added Cursed Cannonballs, expanding ship combat by having special cannonballs that would either effect the ship by dropping anchor, raising sails, locking the rudder, etc, or players/skeletons by making them dance, be poisoned, limp, etc.
Third major update was Forsaken Shores, adding in a new volcano and lava themed biome to the south-east portion of the map. This also introduced a new type of Merchant voyage, where you take cargo from one outpost, and take it to a NPC somewhere else in the world. Said cargo needs taking care of - plants need water, bottles need to be handled with care, cloth can't get wet.
Fourth major update was Shrouded Spoils, introducing fog to the game (which is probably one of the best fogs in video games in general tbh), and reintroducing the megalodon, the NPC skeleton ships, and a ship battle "world event" that can take the place of the skull fort events occasionally. This was the update that eventually got people coming back to the game and being like "hey, things are actually happening now", as the NPC skeleton ships and megalodon can generally show up and attack you at any time - along with the Kraken now attacking Sloops as well as Galleons and Brigantines.
"But is there anything to earn other than cosmetics now?"
No, not really. This isn't like GTA Online or a MMO. There isn't ""meaningful progression"" to be had other than cosmetics and access to Pirate Legend voyages.
"Is there a story at all?"
Well, this update is supposedly adding some story-line quests in the world that sound more involved than just "go here and dig" - I doubt they'll be very replayable, however.
"Does death and losing treasure/ships mean anything other than superficial loss yet?"
No, and they have no plans to make it say, cost you money everytime you die or anything like that. They were going to but there was a large backlash against it.
I honestly recommend Sea of Thieves nowadays. I liked it at launch but it did feel a little... empty? But now with the addition of the new enemy types and general "more things going on" I find it much more enjoyable.
Between skeleton ships, the kraken that now attacks all ship sizes and more often, megalodon sharks, shipwrecks, and random lootable chests and mermaid statues go a long way to spicing up the voyage routine.
To be honest the main reason I play this game is just for the relaxing part of the sailing, but having it punctuated with randomly arranged bits of interest is great.
I still want nothing to do with other players, though. I realize that's the antithesis of the game's design but I guess I'm antisocial. Pretty much everyone would kill the solo slooper if they think they can.
Can't wait for the story missions, cooking, and fishing to be added
I would say that it probably isn’t the game for you. I’ve had a blast playing recently, because i have two solid friends we just fuck around. Cosmetics are the only goal right now, but they’ve upped the cosmetic game and the way to get there is far more interesting especially with the inclusion of NPC Ghost Ships.
