• GMOD fog (dustcloud) looking quite ugly.

Alright, so on my older laptop, my fog looked like this: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/445713/84867bc0-225a-4851-b305-618abe7ee8ac/gd.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/445713/fab041eb-f731-45e6-86ed-8074dfa72ab4/goodfog.png And now, on my current, better PC, it looks as pictured below: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/445713/69de04c2-3e52-4d26-82b2-f5736bf6ce72/20190323140947_1.jpg Some other friends of mine have also reported their fog looking the same as above. I dunno what could've caused this change, I've even resorted to changing the settings of my graphics driver. None of the in-game ones in the options menu have changed anything. If anyone knows the mystery behind this ugly fog that is making maps with fog look like doodoo honky donk, please send an solution my way. I'll be really grateful.
Addons sometimes override default sprites. Check any recently installed addons. I think if you get the sprite material path, you can use the "whereis" command (correct me if I'm wrong) to see where it's being retrieved from.
I don't install addons often, I just play on servers really. I did disable them all, and I wiped my downloads folder clean. No change. I could try whereis, but I'm struggling to find the path of the particle used. I know its called sparkles or somethin... But otherwise, still lost.
Ah, yeah... I know for a fact sparkles is uhh, not very good, and causes the weird nasty banding you're seeing when it's used. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/2014/3458f16f-8f9c-4163-b7fe-3690ec4aeff7/image.png Yep, that's the issue then. Perhaps on your old computer you picked up something somewhere from a server that replaced them, as you said. But pinpointing that would be extremely difficult, I just learned whereis for materials is really not wanting to work, just spitting out "file not found" no matter what. Works for models, though, figures...
It does work just file, you must specify proper extension and path: ] whereis materials/particle/sparkles.vmt <gmod>\sourceengine\hl2_misc.vpk\materials\particle\sparkles.vmt
That's weird, I did exactly that, it couldn't find it and then I restarted my game and then it could. What the fuck??? Well, thank you, least I know now.
Yea, that must've been what happened. (downloading different particles) I changed up the dustcloud settings, and using a higher alpha value made it look a lot better. Strange though. I never installed anything that probably would've changed that, but I guess I did somehow.
