Nintendo plans two new Switch models for this year One cheaper, one higher-end Nintendo is working on two new versions of the Switch that could be released as soon as this summer, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. One of the models is said to be a cheaper variant, while the other device reportedly has “enhanced features targeted at avid video gamers.” The cheaper model will omit the vibration feature, suggesting that it won’t have detachable Joy-Con controllers at all; it’s said to be seen as a successor to the 3DS. It was said that Nintendo was planning to release a smaller Switch with an even bigger focus on portability. The report doesn’t have any firm details on the higher-end model, but one source implied there was more to the revision than a simple performance boost.
hell yes ive been waiting for this
I knew this was exactly the path they would take. Hopefully the Switch Pro has a 1080p screen and supports docked quality play on the go.
great looking forward to every 3rd party major title optimising for the faster console and having to play at around 20fps
My smartphone aupports 1440p despite being half the size and a third the weight of the switch. O don't feel ljke a 1080p screen would break the power drain that badly.
With AC Switch and Smash Ultimate i've really been wanting to pick up a Switch. This is good news, though like other users mentioned I hope the 'pro' version won't be a more powerful version resulting in new games running worse on the 'normal' Switches
god fucking dammit, I just got a Switch and now they bring out a new one?
much much later in the year, so by that point the Switch would have had a good three year life cycle.
I wasn't really expecting the Switch to get a hardware revision. I guess I just should have waited. I hope developers don't fuck over the performance of the original Switch too much.
i wish companies would fuck off with releasing improved models, feels like i get gypped for being an "early adopter"
If your phone tried to run Switch level games at 1440p it'd run out of battery in about ten minutes then melt.
And this shows in the complexity and quality of graphics on most smartphone games. The thermal design is also poor; my Droid Z could play Daydream games for around 20 minutes before overheating.
I'm surprised that the new SKUs haven't shown up anywhere else other than this report, Nintendo is cutting it pretty close if the New Switch and Super Switch are supposed to be out as early as "Summer".
As long as there are no exclusive games, then I'm not too bothered. I really don't want Nintendo to alienate all of its early adopters, myself included.
Nintendo are normally pretty good at avoiding exclusive games, but I've enjoyed the heck out of my switch so an upgraded model with hopefully a better battery more than anything else would be dope.
Ah I knew it! Waiting finally payed off.
3ds/2ds and new 3ds/2ds?
Hyrule Warriors was literally unplayable on a normal 3ds
Sick, with not many games the old Switch will be obsolete already! God I regret being an early adopter with Nintendo. WiiU dogshit and now this, really makes me feel like my purchases are wasted. I don't understand, you are saying three years is atypical, as in, not normal. Are you sure you didn't mean it the other way?
This is too early. It would make sense to do this in 3 years.
the new 3ds came out 3 years after the original 3ds. the ds lite came out 2 years after the original ds. from other vendors, the ps3 slim came out 3 years after the ps3. the ps4 pro came out 2 years after the ps4. the same holds true for the xbone, and only the 360 stands alone as taking 4 years between its first iteration and its first refresh. what do you want? this isn't a new console, it's an entirely nominal timeline for a hardware refresh and the switch has had some amazing games. botw, odyssey, splatoon 2, smash, numerous great indie game and other ports. plus we have sword and shield + ac and a potential persona 5 port coming this year. the wiiu thing is understandable, but it's not like nintendo purposefully fucked people over. the console sold so incredibly poorly that nintendo considered exiting the console market entirely, of course they couldn't afford to support it at the same scale as other systems. but the switch has tons of great games and ive really enjoyed mine (which i picked up about 6 months post launch). i don't feel abused by this at all, similarly to how i didn't feel abused by the announcement of the new3ds, despite owning one and loving it since launch. the switch turned 2 this month and it will probably be another 4-5 months (optimistically) before these hit shelves. 2.5 years is a little ahead of the curve but nowhere near unheard of. this is fine timing, especially considering that it's probably accelerated to fix the tegra hardware loophole entirely instead of just covering it up.

If a nice performance boost is to be expected then I worry for my wallet.
but when are we going to be able to get emunand on it
ive been looking forward to a switch pro x ever since i got mine, but i hope it's a big bump in performance over the regular. i want my 60fps daemon x machina damn it
They are pretty limited in performance boosting. Tegra X2 went from 4+4 cores to 2+4 so this might be a no-no for Nintendo and in that case all they can do is make a beefier heatsink and battery to compensate for cpu overclock.
The Tegra X1 was 4+4 cores, but the 4 A53 cores aren't really accessible by the operating system and the cpu decides when to engage them. It's to the point where even official Nvidia stuff will list it as having only the four A57 cores. So it's more along the lines of 4+2 vs 4+0. That aside, the X2 is critically much better in terms of efficiency being on a smaller node (16 vs 20). At least at 15W for the TX1, the TX2 will match it at half the amount. Considering the TX1 in the switch runs fairly low clocks (probably consuming closer to 5-7.5W), peg a little beefier cooling supply on an performance oriented version, toss in the TX2, and it's probably going to be a notable performance jump.
I'm slighty curious if they will make a dock-only version of the Switch, akin to what the PS TV tried to do with the Vita.
That happens with the normal Switch now.
FYI same reporter said same thing last time, don't expect anything from this http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2018/12/nintendo_focused_on_the_current_switch_so_dont_expect_a_revision_anytime_soon
