This came out in January, but I know for a probable fact that Rushkoff hasn't been posted here before. He's very much an important figure to the Digital Landscape but like most important figures, he's buried under all the data noise.
I was with him all the way to the zombie part included, I feel like this guy doesn't really understand transhumanism or the problems with human nature in general. Still agree with a lot of his points.
His point is that our current cultural zeitgeist put humanity in this incredibly negative light; and then that negative light gives creedance to destructive ideas. Its dangerous to only paint negative pictures because then when a positive occurs you go scouring for the worst.
You can't believe in things like UBI and etc; and then also subscribe to negatives about human nature. Its a circular mess of logic.
You can believe in negative qualities of human nature while also working towards how these qualities can be mitigated or improved. It might sound banal, but misplaced optimism can be just as dangerous then misplaced pessimism.
I don't disagree with the idea that perhaps we need some more respect for each other and for who we are and see each other as human beings, but keep in mind that we are living in times where the complicated nature of our word has amplified and made clearly visible some of our worst flaws. And there really wasn't a better time for humanity either, no matter how far into the past you will go, you will always see even more and more suffering and injustice. It's just today we are suffering for reasons we are not quite used to or understand.
I am more terrified that those people legit simply try to isolate themselves. That there is enough reasoning for them to be brought to interrogation for crimes against humanity.
