Here's the other thing they announced at the keynote. https://www.theverge.com/2019/3/25/18280589/apple-arcade-gaming-subscription-release-date-pricing-features Not launching till Fall, but here's their little preview video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95FuVib8mcY
I've lost count to how many subscription services there are now. Not just for games, but for shows and movies too.
Why get one payment from your customer when you can milk them with services? Especially when your average consumer will forget what services they're subscribed to and keep auto-pay enabled.
If they genuinely didn't have microtransactions, I think this is a good idea. I've been totally put off mobile games for years because they're basically just storefronts to get more money from you. There are a few mobile games like Fallout Shelter where it's not really necessary to pay more, but all the games I see advertised on YouTube and stuff are clearly geared for just milking you for everything you own. I prefer to buy a game with a one-off upfront cost and know that I won't have to invest any more cash in it.
Xbox Arcade <-> Apple Arcade. hmm!
Just make a beautiful product for gaming, Apple. Some kind of gamepad attachment. No point in gaming when controls are so bad.
I think it's a pretty neat way to introduce mobile casuals to core games. From the looks of it most of them are indies, perfect for Apple users!
