https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aBy61M-P-A This is the writing of YIIK. It's really terrible and gives me a really fucking bad impression about the guy who wrote it.
I love how YIIK's title is so retarded, it's meant to be like this cool hip way of saying "Y2K" but the human mind can only ever process it as "YEEEUGCH", like it's a sound-effect from an old Weird Al track or something. It's literally an Arrested Development gag brought to life, I love it so much.
That the guy throws multiple references to his fucking terrible first game is just hilarious to me. Though from what I've seen the game seems a bit chronologically confused. It's meant to be the 90s but characters mention games that won't exist for years. Why not just set in today and say it's in some hipster town near San Francisco? Because they wanted a vinyl record as a weapon? Vinyl is bigger now than it was in the 90s.
YIIK sound really dumb but dang I really like that aesthetic

You guys just aren't able to appreciate the highly engaging gameplay that only true retro gamers would be able to get https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwCKPhlyU5M The music makes me want to fucking shoot myself
this is nauseating to watch and listen to

Chrono Trigger - Released 1995 Lufia 2 - Released 1996 Secret of Mana - Released 1993 Imagine your brain being so old, that you become nostalgic over 5 year old games.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot when it comes to games like Life is Strange. I don’t even know anymore, is that game pretentious? I liked it, but maybe I shouldn’t.

Gonna nitpick Gris and say that I think the overdone pop-psych nature of the five stages somewhat diminishes the theme.
Pretentious is when something tries to boast but then falters due to bad execution or lack of understanding in said subject. Life is Strange (1) is about some teen time travel supernatural drama. If you like the hella and resonance with the characters then nothing is wrong with it. To be honest I didn't even realize the 'metaphor' when playing the game since there are a bit more levels than just the ones mentioned in the video. The story's interpretation is quite ambiguous.
Holy crap, I've seen a lot of horrible lines from this game, but that one actually makes me upset
You tellin' me it got textbox-style captions, but is fully voiced? That's fucking heresy!
I think it's unfair to compare YIIK to a game that doesn't have dialogue. If you put YIIK alongside most other indie games that have dialogue I don't really think it's that much worse than average. People seem to be acting like having sub-par writing in a game isn't the norm, and that the indie games scene hasn't always had an abundance of hipster douchbags.
This is pretty off topic but I always get reminded of it everytime YIIK is brought up https://imgur.com/a/wmYHCTx
the FPS is definitely that youtuber's recording, seeing as the earlier videos in the thread were smoother, but yeah this is like if someone thought slamming Earthbound and Mario & Luigi together as an unironic hipster game with no sense of taste was a good idea. It's all imitation without much in the way of standing out on its own, much like I Am Setsuna, but the creator thought his "WACKY AND HILARIOUS" self-referential writing and excessive prose could make up for it. Boy howdy it didn't.
I'm not convinced the writer of YIIK knows how people actually talk. Or think.
I have a weird taste in games. Have you ever heard of Mother 2? i bet you don't i'm based off that game.
That's not even actually him. It's someone that just looks like the character. This is the actual guy. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/210214/0905d950-5815-4e4f-8bf7-5e90372083c7/d89.png
Maybe if the prose & dialogue were bad but kept to a minimum, which really isn't the case here.
You say that, but a modern fantasy Mario & Luigi-style game would be right the fuck up my alley. The key here I think is execution, which this YUUK fails at in every regard. Story's pretentious, dialogue's overly prosey, gameplay is too slow, puzzles are brainless, level design flips between uninspired and pointlessly weird, character designs are fugly, and it ties it all up in a nice tidy product that feels like it was designed by a modern equivalent to the shithead protagonist of Catcher in the Rye.
Decent video but the narrator of the video needs to stop speaking directly into the mic or get a pop filter or something. It was getting kinda distracting.
Watching videos of YIIK's writing reminds me a lot of high school writing that are filled with a lot of random shit and repeated stuffs to match the word limit of the assignments.
Then compare it to similar games, undertale and night in the woods It gets shit on in both ways
