https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2019/03/26/betsy-devos-special-olympics/3278388002/ WASHINGTON — Education Secretary Betsy DeVos on Tuesday defended deep cuts to programs meant to help students and others, including eliminating $18 million to support Special Olympics, while urging Congress to spend millions more on charter schools. While proposing to add $60 million more to charter school funding and create a tax credit for individual and companies that donate to scholarships for private schools, DeVos' budget proposal would still cut more than $7 billion from the Education Department, about 10 percent of its current budget. President Trump proposed a $4.7 trillion overall budget this month with an annual deficit expected to run about $1 trillion. It calls for eliminating billions in grants to improve student achievement by reducing class sizes and funding professional development for teachers as well as cutting funds dedicated to increasing the use of technology in schools and improving school conditions. In many cases, DeVos said the purpose of the grants has been found to be redundant or ineffective. In the case of the $17.6 million cut to help fund the Special Olympics, a program designed to help children and adults with disabilities, DeVos suggested it is better supported by philanthropy and added, "We had to make some difficult decisions with this budget."
broke: 200 billion in money for the pentagon woke: -18 million towards education spending
Oh of course this slimeball wants to cut finding to directly find something she already has her fingers in (the charter schools). Disgusting waste of funding

my senator is still somehow enamored by this bitch even though ohio's schools are being slowly taken over by the state because they're all failing and decades of poor funding are one of the biggest issues. charter schools were the darling here right until they realized they too were failing kids and costing a fortune
Special Olympics is a big deal in my town in Terre Haute, that'll be a big deal if that goes.
How does a woman like this singlehandedly have the power to just revoke one of the most beneficial events for people with disabilities in the US?
She submitted her recommended budget and she's defending it in a congressional hearing, the House runs the budget and Democrats aren't going to allow this.
Never forget it was Pence who was the deciding vote to get this bitch in.
Well that's good to hear at least. Still infuriating this is the kind of brain-dead budget this woman proposes. Literally just defund everything and hope some billionaire wants to fund education while charter schools get paid billions by the government into the pockets of other billionares. For a platform that hates socialism they sure do like giving rich people money.
Public schools continue to be raped and defunded, because that's the poor people schools. Charter schools and private schools are usually paid for by the rich. So the poor get to stay dim and dumb, and the rich get a decent education. I fucking despise republicans.
