(CNN) A fraternity at the University of Georgia has been temporarily suspended after a video circulating on social media shows several people mocking slavery and one person using
the n-word.
The video, about 30 seconds long, shows an individual lightly hitting another person with a belt. At least one person is heard saying, "Pick my cotton, b****." As the group laughs, the
phrase is repeated several times. A male voice is heard saying, "You're not using the right words," and then someone uses the n-word.
The Xi-Lambda chapter of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity at UGA is currently suspended and "there is an investigation underway regarding the students involved in the video," UGA's
Student Government Association said in a statement.
The organization said the incident did not take place on the fraternity chapter's premises. The four people in the video have been expelled from the fraternity chapter, according to TKE,
which also confirmed the chapter was temporarily suspended.
"Man, isn't racial subjugation just HILARIOUS?"
I swear to fuck these frats give good ones a bad name
the good ones know how to not get caught
Or they just don't do anything because there's literally no inherent reason that a given group would be horrible just because it's comprised of college age men.
Some frats are bad. A lot aren't.
Considering a lot of frats are co-ed(because male in Latin tends to work as a they), and they're also usually not social but work/charity groups.
Social frats make up a minority.
"College students get really drunk and say offensive things in privacy while being recorded" is a pretty accurate representation of the video.
I guess a suspension is fine, I think being expelled from the school would be going too far.
It just seems unfair that college students all across the country get drunk and say really offensive things all the time, but these kids have to face harsh punishment because someone took a video of it and spread it across social media.
Frat culture is despicable.
It sounds like you're right on the cusp of understanding that the onus is on you to stop unfairly generalizing but just not quite getting there
I'm not sure what you call this bias but most frats never do anything significant. You can easily have a tainted perception because the ones that do messed up stuff get the spotlight.
I'm in a frat. The worst thing I ever had to go through was stay up past my bed time for poorly planned meetings.
I was in a frat. I partied a lot. I drank too much. I don't see what's so "despicable" about that, and how you seem to conflate that with that last, ridiculous point. Painting the picture of all fraternities participating in rape, assault, and/or hazing is an unfounded opinion, and makes you seem like you don't even know what most fraternities really do.
Not only did we drink and party a lot, but we also made significant contributions to the community around us and taught fiscal responsibility to people in a lower economic class in the area (was in a business social frat). I made plenty of bonds that still haven't been broken, and communicate with my brothers for what seems like 4 years after I finished college, which is more than what most people can claim after graduation. None of the (over 30+) members were ever accused of rape, sexual assault, battery, etc., and the most we were in trouble for was doing dumb stunts for fun and pranking campus police.
Frats aren't the unregulated messes they were 20 years ago. They've evolved quite a bit in most cases. Yes, there are still some truly awful fraternities in certain colleges, but I think you're just generalizing based on your own prejudice.
This, more than anything, is the truth right now. I myself am a part of a fraternity that's done so many changes to the system we're unrecognizable compared to the original founding of our chapter 20 years ago, like how we got rid of pledging since it encourages hazing and replaced it with our own system of recruitment, and we've gotten rid of alcohol and other substances completely from the house. We still have our fun, seniors will go out to bars and me and some of the other under-21s do go partying on occasion, but it's very tame in comparison of the frats of the 80s and 90s. Most of the other fraternities around us, especially the "party" frat, have chilled out a bunch as well and seem more focused on making sure their members are getting good enough grades to stay in rather than shoving as much alcohol in their system as possible. Most social fraternities have realized at this point that having the reputation of being nothing but drunk hooligans that abuse their own members isn't a good reputation to have and have made steps to try and stop that.
