https://i.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/111596809/exrussian-soldier-dies-of-suspected-suicide-after-police-standoff-in-christchurch He was about to go the gym with his friends on Tuesday when a friend messaged him to say there was a large police presence near his father's home. After establishing his identity, police told the 16-year-old he was going to be arrested for possession of ammunition and a firearm in his room. He said the firearm in his room was an 8 millimetre blank pistol. The other gun, found in his father's room was an illegal, modified SKS semi-automatic, he said. He said his father, who had previously spent time in prison for assault, was worried about going back to prison for possessing the illegal firearm. Hinds said Dubovskiy, who was a member of the Russian special forces, fighting in Afghanistan and Chechnya, told him he felt "naked" without a gun. "He needed something to give him that security," he said. The 54-year-old tried calling his son once and ex-partner twice, however officers told them not to answer the phone. His ex-partner briefly spoke to him, and he said goodbye, his son said. Dubovskiy also called another friend, 21-year-old Jonathan Hinds. "He just called me brother and said goodbye," Hinds told Stuff. TLDR; the man's son had changed this Facebook profile picture to a three-year-old photo of him in a Russian infantry kit with an airsoft replica because him and his father frequently played airsoft. Someone reported him to the police and the police raided their property and house, discovering a 8 mm blank pistol and his father's now illegal SKS. The father fearing he would go to jail for owning the weapon, got into a standoff with police which ended with the man ''' comitting suicide ''' by allegedly stabing himself multiple times.
This is just one of those stories where it's incredibly sad all around, where there's not really anyone acting incorrectly and no good potential solutions I can think of.
Honestly, if the alternative was spending your last years in prison, I'd probably do the same.
Yeah there was never really an alternative in this scenario that could have ended well. What were the cops going to do, let a subject of the crown continue to possess a firearm?
Imagine killing yourself over a gun smh.
Imagine being sent to prison over property.
I don't agree with the arrest but this statement is ridiculous; if it turned out someone was stockpiling, say, bomvs, that would be a valid reason to be arrested over property.
Imagine confusing concern over a prison sentence with a desire to retain property
Nobody is saying you're wrong. You're getting dumbs for intentionally taking his post out of context and comparing owning a single preban rifle to a terrorist stockpiling explosives to conduct a terrorist attack.
Question is was the gun illegal before or after the new gun reforms? Like even in the US if you are found with a light machine gun in your house it'll probably raise eyebrows.
But that's exactly his point... Like, he's showing how the principle of "property cannot be bad" can go wrong. It's an entirely valid argument! What the hell is going on here
Hinds said Dubovskiy, who was a member of the Russian special forces, fighting in Afghanistan and Chechnya , told him he felt "naked" without a gun. Jesus Christ, if he fought in the Afghan War and Chechnya then holy shit.
I'm not taking anything out of context. They said "imagine getting arrested for possession of property", a very open ended statement. I'm responding to it. Because the idea of getting attested for property isn't ridiculous at all. If they meant something more nuanced, they should have said it. There are actual people who hold the belief in that post, namely libretarians. Actual people believe that. Also, you don't know why the person was stockpiling the bombs, I never said they were a terrorist. Maybe they were a collector :^)
Hahaha what. How did you come to this
An SKS of all things. A dated, antiquated, surplus rifle. Not a light machinegun, an SKS Who the hell confiscates an SKS
The police's job is to carry out the law though. I wasn't talking about politicians.
How did I come to what? The literal statement that you made?
The dude had a legal rifle before a ban and you equated it to hoarding explosives. Tell me why I should take you serious.
come on, man, you knew what he meant
He's not saying they're equivalent, he's saying the statement 'Imagine getting arrested over property' is dumb because there are situations where you should be arrested over property.
You know fully well what he meant. You’re just grasping at straws to justify measures which are entirely unnecessary.
Which is fair, but we can infer quite clearly what the property in question is, so equating it to explosives is disingenuous.
Everything about that fucking article is sad. They're painting him in a red light because he owned some WW2 Memorabilia? And the Police told his son and ex not to pick up the phone and talk to him? What the fuck.
Someone reported a fucking Facebook pic of the guy holding an Airsoft gun? That's fucking great, this is post-911 level paranoia and this is exactly what the shooter fucking wanted. Everything the shooter had hoped and written down in his retarded manifesto is coming to fruition so congratu-fucking-lations.
I know it's smacktarded to complain about the government "doing what the shooter wanted", but shooting an old man to death over his heirloom rifle is fucking AMAZING anmo for the anti-gun-seizure narrative.
People keep bringing up the argument that lethality and looks are unconnected, often comparing 'scary black' AR15s to 'friendlier looking' Mini 14s. By the exact same logic, an SKS is equal to an AK pattern rifle, except the SKS is the less scary looking one. Excusing an, as article states, illegally modified semi-automatic rifle for being SKS and the dude for being a veteran is silly, the police had solid grounds for confiscation and possible charges based on the information given. And now, so I don't seem like an insensitive cuntbag only here to achthully someone over pro/anti-gun arguments, have the obvious take anyone would have on the situation: Reporting someone to the police for airsoft profile pictures is also fucking silly, which is where it all started. Committing suicide over fear of going to prison is tragic as all hell, and there'll probably never be a full explanation as to why the man here decided to do so; from the reporting on the phonecalls he made, it seems like he was a man with a lot of shit weighing him down.
I was responding to the post that you made, which made an open ended statement. Which I replied to. If you meant something different you should have posted something different.
He wasn't shot, though.
Ah, my mistake; I misread the article.
"A high priority investigation is under way to determine whether or not the deceased man posed a threat to the community. This will include further searches of Christchurch properties and interviews with family and associates." "We are grateful to those who alerted police on this occasion and encourage people to remain vigilant." “Citizen reminder, inaction is conspiracy. Report counter-behavior to a civil protection team immediately.”
