Before anyone gets excited about that lever - that controls how close or how far apart the lenses are to better adjust your eyes. WMR headsets have this too.
And speak of the devil. As I was just about to call Valve lazy, they come out with this. Hopefully, Halflife VR or Boneworks will be bundled with it too. May sell my current WMR headset if this is the case...
"Artifact's dead! Quick, announce the headset!"
but for real though i'm super excited for this. only got my Rift last year but i'm gonna replace it with this for sure
glad to see it has hardware IPD and not software like the Rift S does
really looking forward to getting my hands on the knuckles, too
Oh wow i didn't expect it to get released this early, i can't wait to see the Specs if it's good it will be my first VR Headset i'll get
Yeah, I'm gonna ebay my rift and get this if it comes bundled with the Knuckles, the Valve ecosystem seems superior and Facebook seems disinterested in pushing the envelope for PC.
I wonder if this is actually a Vive 2 or some other device, hopefully full release of knuckles at least.
Could be Valves attempt at a cheaper Vive with the same built-in tracking that the new Rift or WMR ones use.
what if it'll be released alongside a new half-life/portal/l4d3 vr game as a launch title? that'd be so cool
That sounds like an excellent business strategy! So Valve probably will not do this
How much you want to bet this goes the way of literally every other hardware thing that Valve has done? Steam Machines, Steam controller, steam link... all of them failed due to both problems with the hardware themselves and valve's general apathy and disinterest towards creating and/or maintaning a functional product. It's great that Valve is finally doing something that actually might be decent but from all the times I've been burnt I highly doubt it will amount to much more than a bunch of hype and then immediate disappointment.
I feel like they didn't fail with problems with the hardware, more the general market for them was non-existent. Steam controller, mouse touchpad that no one liked. Steam machine, too niche of a market. Steam Link, same deal.
If they can sell it below cost using their Steam money, they could get a ton of people into the VR ecosystem. A high FoV (120-130) with Vive Pro resolution and Knuckles controllers for $400 would be the dream.
A lot of people are speculating it'll launch with Half-Life VR (or HLVR as it's known through datamine leaks) but I'm keeping expectations at bottom-of-the-barrel minimum here, tbh, and so should a lot of people. That way if Valve ever does decide to wake the fuck up, it'll be eye-opening.
I might be in the minority considering I've seen this opinion quite a bit, but I like the Steam Controller and Steam Link. No complaints really for the Link, and my only issue with the controller is how much pressure needs to be applied to the bumpers. It could be a tad smaller, but for someone like myself with small hands, it's not unusable. So far I've used the controller with; Dark Souls 1 (Remastered) and 2, Portal 2, STALKER SoC, Fallout NV, Wolfenstein TNO, System Shock 2, Civ 5, and it also worked out pretty well for the Metroid Prime Trilogy. While it did require a bit of fiddling with controller bindings to get some of these games working proper with it, it ended up being worth it in the end.
This headset looks neat though, I'm definitely going to keep my eye on it. I've yet to experience VR and this might be a good opportunity to fix that.
They can make the money back in VR game sales if they sell the headset at a loss.
the steam controller and steam link have both been successful enough for them to still get updates today - the steam link hardware was discontinued, yes, but the core of it lives on with the android app.
the steam controller though is still alive and well, and steam wouldn't have the huge controller input support system it has now if it weren't for the steam controller - you know how you can use your Switch Pro controller, or your DS4 controller with any game on steam? that's all thanks to the steam controller.
the steam controller definitely wasn't for everyone, some love it and some don't - but by no means was it a failure. as of September 2018, there's a million steam controllers out there. that doesn't sound like a failure to me
Speak for yourself when it comes to the controller, the Steam Controller is the best controller on the market imo.
Still uses SteamVR Lighthouse tracking. They just got rid of the hideous dimples that the Vive had. You can still see the sensors though.

the steam link is excellent. the controller on the other hand, is a great on button for the steam link
i just wish I could get an extra power adapter for the fucking thing and not just have them say "hey go buy a second steam link buddy"
i liked the dimples because it reminds me of this guy

Ok we've finished the headset, HL3 team is the game done?
Artifact team: what game?
I've invested too munch into Vive accessories to switch to the Index. I just hope it'll be possible to purchase the Knuckle Controllers separately so that I can finally get rid of the garbage Vive Wands.
Seriously, most of my friends have had/are having issues with the track-pads slowly dying after a while, it's also not good if you want snappy controls.
Yeah I'm pretty sure having it front-and-centre in this ad is a not-so-subtle dig at the new Rift S, with its fixed IPD.
Anyone got any idea of a pricerange?
New lighthouses support practically limitless number in conjunction, so just buy a couple extra and set those up elsewhere.

Showed Valve testing BOE and JDI VR LCDs which are both about 2400x2160 per eye
The hope is Valve doesn't absolutely price gouge the way HTC does, Lighthouse 2.0 uses a single motor, it's literally an extremely cost-reduced piece of hardware, probably costs like 25$ in BoM.
Valve has done it before for their hardware (Steam Controller) so I could see them doing reasonable price for their VR ventures too.
