I want to try to calm everyone. The main points:
NOTHING IS CONFIRMED HAPPENING OR NOT ABOUT THE FUTURE OF FACEPUNCH OR KNOCKOUT
THE BRIEF FACEPUNCH OUTAGE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FACEPUNCH'S FUTURE, IT WAS A COINCIDENCE
THE LOCKING OF THE FACEPUNCH DISCORD IS TEMPORARY, ONLY BECAUSE THE SERVER OWNER IS MOVING CONTROL TO FACEPUNCH STUDIOS
THERE IS NO MODERATOR EXODUS OR COUP OR SCHISM
In short: KEEP BROWSING THE BEST FORUMS AROUND THE SAME AS USUAL
Let me get personal.
I discovered Facepunch in late 2015/early 2016 because all the good TF2 content leaks were here. It's so much more. Let me be clear and say this are the best forums on the goddamn
internet. I visit here every day. I contribute. I've even had a sort of leadership position. Let me be frank and say I genuinely love you all.
I might not be alive without Facepunch. Let's keep laughing and talking on the best fucking site.
This is exactly what the mods want us to know
I do sincerely hope this development doesn't cause anything drastic on here. There's still many threads I want to archive that I hadn't gotten around to due to personal developments, especially regarding my studies.
It maybe be in few months away or sooner, until Garry will announced the fate of this unique forum site, before retiring it.
Just wanted to say thanks to all the people who are working on Knockout and the Mods for trying to maintain some peace for what is a genuinely sad and confusing time for us users.
We greatly appreciate your efforts to keep our community together.
No one knows, theres a chance Garry just wont do anything to the forums as its built upon the core that runs all of the FP sites. But it wont get any updates and theres no guarantee that it wont just go down again like it did, then come back.
All it takes is for someone to get into the database and poof, its gone. He wont bother trying to restore the data for the forums, only for Facepunch Studios if it comes to it as thats where his duties lie.
The forums will be here, just no one knows whats going on and the change of Discord management was a long time coming after Hezzy was laid off.
I'll be wherever the community is. The things that I love about Facepunch have nothing to do with the name or the forum software and everything to do with the culture and the people.

I really wanna know what the whole coup thing was about, what with locking all of the channels in the FP discord at the same time. It sure looked like a hostile takeover taking advantage of the outage to cement control.
Hezzy owns the server and he was fired, he couldn't have run it forever so he decided that now was the time to give it to FP studios, don't know why they locked it.
The list of users and their posts that i've enjoyed are too numerous to even write. If this site goes, then it will be the end of an era.
FP isn't going to last forever. garry isn't interested in continuing the forums. It sucks, but it's time to move.
At least the community has made a replacement before the forums go down for the last time. Ever.
When I saw the same old server error that just sometimes happens until someone in the UK wakes up to slap the server upside the head, I knew nothing was wrong with FP, just a server hiccup as usual.
However, I know that one day, these forums will return an error they don't come back from, or I'll have moved on, whichever happens first. When the forum goes, close to 30,000 posts of mine will disappear, except for random scatterings archived haphazardly in places like the Internet Archive (since it's seemed to crawl FP from time to time). I feel sad about this eventual loss of presence, but at the same time, it is the passing of the Internet seasons and merely the way things are. It's healthy to let it go and let that part of each of us fade into Internet history.
But while I might lose the posts, I won't lose the good times I've had, and the friends I've met through FP. A lot of my posts are not particularly worth preserving or reviewing, but in my post history you'll still find genuine and meaningful human interaction with good people who've also found their way to this weird little taped-up cardboard box in the grungy mean streets of the Internet that we've made into our cozy clubhouse. The forums going down won't knock out FP community Discords, and there's Knockout to catch all of the refugees, but yeah
@garry Thank you for everything you have done and at least for now continue to do to keep this forum online, functional, and staffed/moderated throughout its lifetime, and for all of the hard work put into Newpunch. We literally would not be here without your hosting and support.
While I really digged facepunch back in like 2010-2014, I kinda didn't care for it in the later years, maybe the knockout restart will actually be for the better.
wait so are we moving out to the new house today or not?
I would recommend it, yeah
There's no point in moving before FP is down for good, you might just fracture the community doing that.
And when will that be? We were told "Early 2019". We're now approaching the second quarter.
The forums are falling apart.
Yesterday's downtime completely unannounced / unexpected. How many more times will this happen? Will the website even come back up after one of these? Nobody knows.
Facebook authentication is broken. A lot of people, long standing members of the community, have lost their entire accounts because of this. We reported this problem a month ago and it wasn't even acknowledged.
Development on the forums has completely halted and did so a long time ago. This is just the tip of the iceberg and things will get worse from here on in.
might as well start getting used to the new place, regardless tho, think about how many people we lost in the oldpunch to newpunch swtich
You sound a bit anxious, but apart from the broken FB auth, there's no real cause for concern right now. FP is still very functional and working as intended, and yesterday's downtime is something that happens sometimes, and it had no consequences and didn't even last very long. You're pushing for a hard transition but it would only make things worse; we need to do this smoothly and slowly because not everyone is gonna be willing to jump ship in a panic (especially since the downtime was nothing at all).
You (or anyone) should set a deadline, announce it everywhere, and ask people to move to KO before then, like the 1st of May. Then it's a calm, planned-out transition that should benefit everyone.
I'm not especially anxious, more resolute really.
The FB auth issue is the latest indicator to show the direction the forum is heading.
I understand that people will be reluctant to jump ship straight away. After all Facepunch has been our home for a long time and we're all eternally grateful for the influence it has had on our lives.
That being said, I hope people watch the development of KOC over the next few weeks and make the choice to come over of their own accord. It's the same community, just a different website.
Here is a grand list of shit that is fucked. Bolded are KEY THINGS.
Mod shit is broken and/or half ass works.
Hell I have even caused a runtime error searching for a user.
Some embeds cause css earthquakes.
Mobile is beyond unusable without fixes.
The reply box bugs out on some mobile devices, can be fixed but this shouldn't happen.
Facebook Authentication is fucked. Meaning people who relied PURELY on FB are without their accounts.
Redirects are fucked.
When you move a thread it takes FOREVER for the reply links to move over. High chance of it still 404ing when the move happens mid post.
There are exploits that have yet to be fixed when it comes to posting. I will NOT go over how.
It's not even functional. It's an early access mess and is not working as intended half the time.
Btw all of these have been mentioned.
No fixes in months.
Just keep an account on both sites and keep using FP until Knockout at least surpasses it in terms of features/usability/userbase or goes down for good. If we're all prepared for it, we can then continue on as if nothing happened when the day finally comes. You just go to a different URL and post as you normally would.
Weird seeing you being out of the loop of the happenings at FP studios, especially about the forums.
Man fuck Garry, he doesn't deserve you people, least he could do is just be decisive and get it over and done with or at least tell people what to expect and when it will close.
None of this "fucken whenever i can actually be bothered deleting it" or whatever is stopping him.
Just boggles my mind seeing Garry so disinterested in the community that helped build his fortune.
There are definitely some good causes for concern.
Serious exploits have been reported and demonstrated.
All we're been able to do is to try keeping them secret, to prevent abuse.
So when the end does come, will anyone get warning?
Or is it going to be opening up the page one day and just seeing "server is down" and it never coming back online?
Do we have a broad time frame for when to expect it?
I figure the smart thing would be to move over to knockout now in advance and then if/when FP bites the dust, continue at Knockout as you did here.
Thing is, we know just about as much as you do.
Hopefully there's a warning. Worst case scenario, it just disappears. For all we know Garry might just announce it through Twitter.
AKA pulling a Trump.
There wasn't a warning when we moved over to Newpunch, why would their be a warning for when Facepunch shuts down?
All it's going to take is Garry in a bad mood.
Sorry, you need to Log In to post a reply to this thread.
