• I really don't understand Garry

There are companies out their that pay millions to try to figure out how to create communities like this, and Garry is just pissing it all away. I remember seeing Garry talk about how he owes this community nothing, but that couldn't be further from the truth. He owes this community everything. His career in making his own projects would have very likely ended with Garry's Mod without Facepunch. I know Garry has always been an ass but this is just baffling to me.
You clearly do understand garry
What baffles me is that he thinks that FP could be replaced by reddit as if they are in any way the same. FP is special
Garry's mad that no one is liking his terrible changes to the site and in doing so he throws (in my opinion) a blank threat of saying "i'm gonna delete the forums!!!!! i'm gonna do it!" to make everyone worry because no one "appreciates him or the changes he does for FP." I used to think that Garry was p alright when it came to a person and owner of the site, but after the recent stuff he's been doing to FP I've lost respect for him tbh.
Nobody does
He's a functional sociopath; he's going to do literally what he wants, when he wants. He's not out to get you or to cackle madly while ensuring global warming marches on and Dick Cheney gets that sweet Nude Sanic Inflation Skin, he literally just doesn't give a fuck, the site doesn't engender the same feedback it used to and as far as he's concerned has far outlived it's usefulness >to him.< Pretty simple, no back room villainy present. He just has no fucks to give. At all.
If everyone fucks off then that threat is pretty worthless tbh
jesus christ, he's got a wife, a kid, and an actual game studio (with multiple ongoing titles from adopted developing teams) IN AN ACTUAL OFFICE he's busy, and you should be grateful he didn't close this pet programming project months ago, yet you call him a sociopath
I like garry, i have a level of respect for him and the shit he takes but hes just a man
Yeah, say what you want, but at the end of the day garry is the reason we are all gather here together. He isn't a bad guy, he just doesn't want to be part of our community. That's fine.
Maybe you need to look up the actual definition of the word, because any negative connotation is entirely yours.
As unhappy as I am with the current situation, I don't think constant bashing is giving garry any cause to want to come back and improve the situation, deserved bashing or not. He obviously cared enough to create a new forum system and try to innovative a year ago- I don't think he'd do that if he didn't care or see a future in the forums. My guess, being frustrated, he's gone radio silent until he has something definitive to say or comes to a decision. I am appreciative for all the years he did give this community and forum, even if it does end poorly like this. I just hope that he turns around and realises how important this community is to the people still in it.
Honestly I am in garry's debt for having started this all. I have no bad feelings towards him, and I hope he atleast say goodbye if he decides to give FP forums the boot.
When this forum closes, I will lament. I don't think a microcosm like this will be found again.
This community is why rust and gmod flourished, really shooting himself in the foot with this decision to dissolve the very thing that brought him success.
I don't think garry owes us anything. Most of us played Gmod and Rust for our own enjoyment. Yeah sure, community involvement did a lot for both his titles. His games has a pretty strong and dedicated fanbase. I think the only thing he should do is at the very least have a little bit of a respect for the community. It is hard to gather a community and actually maintain it, he is kinda squandering a good thing. I really don't have any ill-regard for him or even hate the guy, I still think he is a good developer and happy his business is flourishing. He just needs to do better with the community/forums, that is all.
Literally Garry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNZSXnrbs_k
Does it, though? We've been anything but oblivious to Rust and their ongoing projects.
I think Garry really wanted to hype himself up for the project, like, as a deterrent so he wouldn't quit halfway through, it was all "Let's do this" going balls deep from the start, as if ripping off a bandaid But then, he also severely underestimated the amount of time and effort that was actually needed, you could tell, for example, he really thought he'd struck gold with the pixel editor for newpunch (the previous version). Cute idea, but jesus, don't put all your eggs in a pixel art basket that's a minor gimmick, at most. He paraded it around like it was a big draw, was super disappointed when it didn't pan out, and thought everyone who criticized it was a dick, and that was telling of how everything else was going to be. Come new-newpunch, he set out with this mission of "modernization" but still acted like it was 2004, when he made his own successful platform, completely oblivious to how much simpler that was to do back then, or how much he was aided by the popularity of the forum format and lack of alternatives. He puts himself in the positions of project director, management, coding, art direction and web design, on top of the entire customer feedback process, from collecting complaints to personally addressing them, as well as banning decades-long users who he thinks are mean. Needless to say, enthusiasm isn't knowledge. He wants "modern" but doesn't know what features and design elements that entails. He wants FP to be more like Reddit, but understands neither FP, nor Reddit. What on earth is a modern site doing without a mobile version? Why cut out features based around content popularity, a hallmark of literally every comparable platform out there? The process that would've let him learn this shit was dogged by an unmanageable workload that he set up himself. Unsurprisingly it ended with him quitting halfway through. There's not much more to understand
havent really been happy with things since that idiot cull thing. Why did we do that?
what are you talking about?
Which idiot cull
this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rg5lT8dF8Qc
i mean... that's a joke thread from 2013 where everyone posting in it knew they'd be banned, not really anything to do with what we're talking about
And there have been several idiot culls And that's around the period when everyone got unbanned on Garry's birthday anyway so.
He's under no obligation to keep the forum running, it'd be nice if he did, but if he just decides "kill it" for ANY reason there ain't much we can do. Except move on to another forum/platform/discord/whatever.
Garry is completely insulated in his own little world that didn't progress internet wise since 2007, the fact that FP's mobile site doesn't function properly, and hasn't, just goes to show how outdated his understanding of how the web works is. This is the same guy who thinks Reddit is where people have megathreads. He has clearly never been to reddit
Who needs to go to reddit when all the reddit content gets posted here? Have you seen polidicks and sensationalist headlines? might as well rename them r/politics and r/worldnews.
His games are solely popular because of user-created and community driven content.
I don't play Garry's mod or Rust, I was just here because the community is decent/better than most of the rest of the internet.
