God damn it you see this? Just another sign of tyrannical oppression against us. gamers rise up!
fucking oppressionists keeping us down i bet the mods of r/games are all a bunch of dumb stacys and tyrones rise up!
for real though they are right, after playing cs for nearly 1000 hours its rare you find actual friendly players in comp
"We are tired of doing our mod work lets just shut down for a day"
While this puts out a good message, people would have taken it more seriously if it had not been done on April fools.
Discussion of this on other places in reddit is fucking disgusting, here's some choice cuts: http://meharryp.xyz/s/chrome_2019-04-01_12-31-17.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/497/06c2dc99-0750-48fa-ba2f-0730b78b7c98/image.png
April Fool's hahaha, toxicity is just a another word for gamer culture, how smart of them to do that
There are a lot of people who you'd consider friendly outside of cs who are just neutral in game - calling info but not talking too much. That said, there are also a lot of people who'll be downright toxic. I think it's worth taking a stand to let people know that their behaviour isn't tolerated and to let those who are being attacked know the mods are on their side. It's not going to do a huge amount, but I don't know how much you can do without a massive moderation team.
tbh if i cant call all women cunts and bitches and faggots and call for the jews to be gassed when im gaming whats even the point then? im glad to see people rising up against marxism and taking the fight to the subreddits the revoliton starts now
Yeah this is gonna backfire hard.
I was gonna make a joke about how it's the the leftist agenda or something, but it seems like these people are really good at making fools out of themselves
They're right, but I can't imagine how much shit the mods will get afterwards. I guess it's a good way to add a bunch of dickheads to the blacklist.
What a attention seekers they are, using low scored comments to generate a dumb controversy. Between thousands of comments, some of them are crap, big fucking surprise mods. If you want to fix the "toxic" problem on games like Overwatch, tell companies to stop making every multiplayer game so serious about being victorious. If you make a game where people feel like losing is not an option because they lose rank/exp/boxes, they gonna be on the edge an be pissed if someone is not doing 100% perfectly. That's why game now feel so "toxic" compared to multiplayer games years ago. The only way that I see this is "Look how good we are, praise us"!
It's crazy the kind of toxic shit that seems to inevitably become normal unless properly moderated in video game communities wether it be on forum boards or in in game chats. Wether it is people who take video games too seriously and going off on other players or just being ironically edgy and making sweeping comments. A personal anecdotal account of mine is a little ww1 game called Verdun, where I've seen some the nastiest, most racist shit in the chat. It's not a constant issue but it does happen regularly and it's rarely targeted at a specific person but that almost makes it even nastier, it's just people being edgy for edginess sake.
when did politicization and treating people like people regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, etc get conflated?
I don't blame you for being cynical, but I still think this is a good idea and I do wish we would make a little more of an effort from within the gaming culture to make it a little less hostile and degenerate.
When Trump took office.
i agree completely with your point and tbh i feel like its only a natural reaction to call the enemy team niggers and report them for hacking when i lose a game because my cunt of my mother keeps yelling that her gross dinner is ready
Free speech has become the justification to be a bigoted asshole
I played a TF2 Mann vs Machine match yesterday where a guy who just joined got yelled at for going Scout. Dude left pretty quick. And then i got vote kicked out for pointing out that the Engineer put a teleporter exit right next to an instakill map hazard. Something needs to be done about online behavior in general. It's not just games, every community where people can be anonymous has people like this.
Maybe players should take responsibility for their actions instead of passing the blame onto developers.
You're probably right, but that speaks worse of the gaming community than it does of this subreddit. The fact that so many gamers continue to be toxic assholes is something that is more or less accepted. Everyone is going to eventually be called a fag over voice chat, and we just ignore it and move on. But the problem is that the same people who are calling everyone faggots, are more often than not outright sympathetic to the worst movements in this country - if not outright part of the alt-right, white supremacism, and neo-nazism.
I hope the internet fucking dies
I mean, I get it. And it's not just a case to tell people to grow a thicker skin. But if they are that desperate to stomp our this kind of behaviour, I can see them just getting rid of all forms of communication. Xbox pretty much did this unintentionally with the party chat system and I'd argue its a shadow of its former self today. And then that just won't be fun for anyone. But at least no body would be hurt, right?
You cannot control people's minds, if someone wants to post hateful shit and act like a cunt there's very little you can do to stop them. Even if they are banned, in a large community they'll just keep making alts. However, every single comment the admins pointed out in their post has a negative rating, the highest you see are +5. Due to the way Reddit works, these posts are immediately hidden at the very bottom by default. They were literally scraping the bottom of the barrel to find hateful comments and are now shutting down the subreddit for a day over them. Who is this supposed to impress? If anything, this tells shitposters that they can shut a subreddit down simply by being a cunt. They can expect a massive raid tomorrow, that's for sure.
It won't change anything
I am not saying that players are innocent, a lot of idiots exits, specially now that videogames are a mainstream hobby. What I was trying to say is that games like League of Legends make people so nervous about their rank and similar stuff that only makes worse the problem and makes people even more angrier and stop having fun. I am playing online games since the 90', in that era, everyone was super nice to each other, if someone needed help everyone helped him, and the worse insult that existed was "noob". That ended when eSports become a thing and multiplayer like Counter Strike stopped being about fun with random people to "If you choose the healer that is not in the actual meta I am breaking your legs!". I stopped playing Dota because everyone treat me like shit because I was not buying the correct items. Again, I am not trying to minimize the problem about homophobia and similar problems that exists in the current times, sorry if I give that idea, I was saying that games now only makes worse the problem.
And if they do nothing, they get accused of doing nothing to help curb it. There's no winning.
They should ban anyone posting horrible accounts when it re-opens tomorrow.
