All the nominees are in there but the Lindsay Ellis nomination for Best Related Work seems to be getting the most buzz. First time that a YouTube video essay has been nominated for a serious literary award?
It's a pretty quality essay series that dives into how not to adapt a beloved fantasy book, so I'd say its a deserved nomination.
Plinkett never talked about anything that was adapted from a fantasy or sci-fi novel, so it really doesn't qualify.
they're great videos, so i'm glad! the truncated title made me think they got taken down though, i was about to be miffed
Still kind of amazing to think how she went from Nostalgia Chick to something that were beyond the quality (and fortunate future prospect) most of the Channel Awesome alumni were
Even as Nostalgia Chick she was already beyond the quality most of the Channel Awesome alumni were. And she's only gotten drastically better.
I saw these a week or two ago, the third episode especially was interesting to me cause I had no idea about the political stuff that went down as a result of the films.
I never finished The Hobbit trilogy something about the gopro shakey cam barrel ride in the second dissuaded me about trusting the quality of the then upcoming third one.
But now I want to watch 5 Armies just so I can then watch her video essay that everyone is talking about .
How bizarre is that?
I'd honestly just skip straight to the video essay lol
Watch the film; reflect on it; let your thoughts gestate; watch the analysis; reflect on it; determine whether you agree or disagree; draw your own conclusion.
Lindsay Ellis has great analytical videos, but even then I wouldn't just watch her video and make her opinions your own (although the third video is a must if you care about studio politics and the shenanigans and exploitation that go into making big budget films). If nothing else, watch it to say that you have and you have some basis to judge the film and how it fits among the trilogy on a technical, narrative, and thematic level (or whatever else).
i remember little of the hobbit in general whereas i remember quite a bit of the entirety of the lord of the rings
it just doesn't hold a candle to the lord of the rings imo
I love Lindsay Ellis' videos in general, especially the one about Twilight, in which she explores whether the internet hated it because it was genuinely god-awful, or because there was a deeper, rather societal, reasoning to the respond that Twilight got, particularly from males.
I'm not a huge fan of The Hobbit, but that's because I have an unusual distaste for how, in everything I've seen him in at least, Martin Freeman always plays the bumbling, occasionally witty on a good day, Brit, and from the minute we're introduced to his rendition of Bilbo, I'm filled with a 'Oh look, it's Martin being Martin again'.
Like stated in the videos, which I agree with, Martin Freeman is perfectly cast for the role of Bilbo and one of the few things I actually really like about the films.
real talk. That's fucking awesome she received the nomination. The amount of detail and attention she puts in her videos and how she researches them is a testament for video essays.
And that's one thing with Lindsay ellis and her relationship with Mike and Channel Awesome. It just makes you wonder how many other geniuses and skilled individuals are bogged down and forced to not show their full potential due to the egos of their higher ups or whoever is controlling their stuff.
Lindsay is one of the few YouTubers I actually support on Patreon (Technology Connections and GMTK are the others). Her videos are well researched, well argued, well made, and she's got a good personality on camera. I'm glad she's getting more recognition. I first learned of her from her breakdown of the Transformers movies, specifically her video on the male gaze, which made me actually understand the concept.
Which is a damn shame. Cause i can say TBOTFA is relatively well shot and the cinematography is well done. Cause well, its fucking Peter Jackson. But yeah, due to the mess of how the script was and not really caring much about the characters (besides Bilbo and Gandalf). So Most of the battles were just senseless noise. Which is also a damn shame cause i love the designs of the Dwarven army and the Northern Orcs. The latter especially cause they had an interesting aesthetic, where it was like a more primitive and "savage" version of the Isengard Uruk-hai Armor.
That sorta describes those hobbit movies in a nutshell. They clearly had thought and effort put into how they created the art-style, aesthetic, and the designs of everything. But due to the mess of the script, which was caused by Corporate/Studio Meddling, it was all wasted.
tbh I liked the first hobbit movie a lot, but the weird way they broke the book up with the 2nd and 3rd movie was annoying. The desolation of smaug should have ended with the battle with smaug
Really don't like the Hobbit movies, everything looks fake.
the hobbit movies make me wonder if someone's ever pitched a Drizzt Do'Urden movie to RA Salvator. Maybe Forgotten Realms has a No Movies policy though, the Dragon Rage series would also be a great screen adaptation
Spent my evening watching it. Really well done video, can see why it's a good contender for the award. Everything is clearly structured, the writing is superb, and it provides an excellent perspective on the franchise as a whole.
Drizzt went downhill around the "king" trilogy, imo. I don't read fantasy schlock for "everyone must die meaninglessly" nihlism.
Ya it sort of lost a lot of momentum. The Neverwinter saga was pretty good if you could look past all the endless call backs and plots of revenge from side characters.
