"It's created to addict, an addiction to keep you in front of a computer for as long as possible. It's so irresponsible. It's like waiting for the damage to be done and kids turning up on your doorsteps and families being broken down."
You mean poor parenting should be banned? If your kid is spending too much time on video games every day, it might just be the fault of the people who actually can control them and not some company that intends to make money.
Fuck, he's right
He's just angry because a 12 year old called him a pee pee head while flossing
Nah this country has enough nanny state shit like the porn blocker thanks. Blame the parents for not controlling their kids properly, not fortnite
We should probably focus less on the "video gaems r badd" interpretation of this and more on the "predatory microtransactions and dark patterns are unethical in a game marketed towards children" interpretation
Why is it literally always anything but "Parents should be better at parenting"?
Parents probably should be able to assume that a game with a low age rating isn't explicitly designed to exploit children.
In this case he has a point tbh. The model that Fortnite uses is designed to addict people, zukriuchen posted Manufactured Discontent and Fortnite, and honestly it's a genuinely interesting breakdown of what Fortnites Battle Royale mode appears to actually be once you get past the surface level "it's a game lmao".
Freemium models in general tend to be geared more towards addicting people, live services take it to a new level. Content platforms are the fairly lofty end goal for these "games", but very few have come close yet.
Fortnite also isn't just played by kids, there's a number of reports of grown ass people having relationships break down or their lives ruined by games such as Fortnite. Addiction can happen to anyone for anything, if you get addicted to these games say goodbye to your money. The UK government DCMS Committee is currently running an investigation into exactly how these radical shifts in entertainment technologies might be impacting us, and the freemium model is one of the many things they're interested in looking at. Jagex have appeared at the session run last night. They mentioned they implemented a £5k/m spending cap, not because they cared about preventing players ruining their lives, but because the financial team thought it was a reasonably anti-fraud measure. These companies are not your friend.
So shitty people doing shitty things for shitty reasons. Who would have thought.
Or rather corporations doing what corporations do unless government intervenes.
All these kids playing their videogames when they should outside stabbing each other, its a bloody disgrace
Parents need to learn to be more vigilant in understanding and researching the media that their children consume, regardless of whether the game takes advantage of rewarding behaviors to enforce addictive patterns or not. You let your kid play an addictive game for hours on end and they become addicted, well, maybe you shouldn't have done that?
I don't think the responsibility is entirely in the hands of the parents. As a society we restrict lots of things to children that one could argue is unnecessary if parents were more aware and responsible. Besides, even if you do take the time to sit down and learn about these games, you really need a deeper understanding and critical mindset to make the conclusion that there's more going on here than it just being a harmless game for kids.
That's fair, I wouldn't mind seeing more regulations on microtransactions in games oriented towards kids. I would say that should just be limited to informing parents about the potential for these mechanisms to be very addictive and maybe limiting them to games rated for teens and up though. Outright banning them is ridiculously heavy handed.
Are children allowed in casinos? If not then they shouldn't be allowed on Fortnite.
Uh, you realize there's no lootboxes in Fortnite Battle Royale, right?
There are in Fortnite Save the World but I guarantee you everyone who gives a shit is talking about the BR side.
History repeats itself, what else is new?
I've been hearing this same shit argument since the early 2000's.
yall overestimate parents burden like come on they should be responsible but that only goes so far when life is so bullshit and complicated as is
Tbh ban it thanks
Why is this same logic not being applied to the addictive properties of fast food, or the way social media is designed?
Or is it because he doesn't actually care and its just: fortnite bad.
He actually mentions social media as well. I am thinking he's saying it should be banned because of its desceptive practices.
But that same logic has been applied to both of those things and has been part of societal discourse for a while now?
Singling out Fortnite is about what I would expect from people who don't understand gaming and honestly a low effort.
It's one of the least worst of the freemium games, perhaps they should be focusing on banning the freemium model instead?
A little disappointed from the shitposting in this thread of people that think it's okay to ban games they don't like.
I don't think a single person here thinks fortnite should actually be banned, but if they do that person may now step forth.
Listen I just want to watch the world burn is that too much to ask
I don't think it should be banned, but man do I have some scathing words about it. The influence and impact of Fortnite is ruining PC gaming as far as I'm concerned, and it's doing it in record time, I
can't see one way this game has positively impacted the gaming world other than reaching a record number of people (mostly kids by the looks of things), especially not the companies involved.
Maybe we should repeal the monarchy after all.
