" Aside from taking away from the aesthetics, opponents argue that drilling into a front bumper to add a plate holder devalues a vehicle. Also, bumpers on new cars increasingly have embedded technology for assisted parking and driving."
I was wondering what the cause would be and really wasn't expecting it to be so blatant. It's not that they aren't needed or that law enforcement has changed their mind, simply a case of rich people not wanting to devalue their cars/just stick a plate in their dash and look tacky...
tbh i wonder how often one actually reads a front license plate rather than the rear one anyway
All the time when using the rear view mirror?
thank god
The American hatred of front-plates is so odd.
I'm wondering why we're drilling into the bumper to put them on in the first place when the bumper already has a spot made specifically for a front plate. Even some surprisingly old cars have this, including my own clunker from '85.
When the bumper doesn't already have a spot made specifically for a front plate.
Most of our cars aren't designed with a front license plate. The most cars have out of the factory is 2 dimples in the bumper where the dealer drills and attaches the license plate mount.
Most of Canada doesn't require them and I've never seen the point of them. Good for Ohio.
Most people with collectors cars I see stick them in the front window or zip tie them to the grill.
I have an irrational hatred of front plates, make them go away please.
I'd hate to have someone drive like a dick behind me and not be able to get their licence number. Really no reason not to have em
It also makes it easier for parking enforcement and other law enforcement in case you can only see the front of the car. Also at places like my university they just scan the plate for parking, so if you parked in backwards you'd be screwed.
tbh if someone is riding your ass that close (at speed), you're probably putting yourself in more danger if you try to read their plate in the mirror
Also let's be honest: asshole drivers want it to be easier to get away with being asshole drivers.
If you can read a license plate, backwards, while driving, that's impressive. Secondly, if they are close enough to you to be a dick, they are probably close enough to you to not be able to see the plate in the first place.
No one has ever had their plate entered from the reverse direction. That always happens when you get pulled or while you're being tailed before you're pulled over. Parking is irrelevant because you can walk to the other side of the car if the meter is out, or...
Like my university, they prohibit back in parking without a permit on your window.
There really is no point to front plates.
It's weird, front plates are fairly popular where I live, but they're just cosmetic ones with designs on them
Aaaand what's your next step
Dash cams exist, and can be applied as a rear camera
Yeah that's what I see in front plate holders too.
I got rear ended in a hit and run. Only reason they caught him is my rear dash cam caught his front bumper licence plate.
Taking it away for aesthetics is fucking dumb.
About time. Although when I lived in Ohio I never had a front plate, and was pulled over plenty of times. The only time the trooper said anything was when the fine for no front plate was cheaper than a speeding ticket + no seatbelt.
Call the cops?
Honestly, whenever I see someone driving very dangerously or aggressively, I report them. It takes all of 10 seconds and can take a very real threat off the road. I've only done it about five times or so, but two of those I actually saw them book the dude. In major cities at the very least, dangerous or inebriated drives are taken extremely seriously.
There is really no logical argument against front plates except "it takes away from cosmetics", which is silly. Rear dash cams exist. Being able to reverse park is useful, especially for trucks. I could only see limited or specialty vehicles being devalued for having a front plate, but not by much.
What if you witness a hit and run and you see only the front of the offending car? It's not just about looking in rear view mirrors.
its more you get hit and the person blames you and your insurance company has to dicker around for 3 months, and this happens over 3 times.
the real use for dash cams is for the insurance company anyways. my agent told me last time someone hit me that they don't bother with the police report if they believe they can establish what happened or if both sides cooperate
My car is legal now
Nice
If we could skip the middle man and just eliminate Ohio completely next, that'd be fine too.
And tell them you saw someone with that plate driving like a dick? Why would they take your report with no evidence, just like that?
That, and making youtube compilations. I don't need to be sold on dashcams, I've been running one myself for a few years now, but you're not gonna get much of anything out of the cops if you're like 'hey uhh I got this guy tailgating me on I-40 this morning here's some footage to prove it'.
Keep it on, if you ever go on a roadtrip some dipshit cop is gonna pull you over and harass you about it
No? every car i've ever seen has had them bolted on (or bolted onto a frame, which is itself bolted to the car)
