And now, likeBlade Runner, it’s getting a Final Cut, courtesy of Coppola himself. Apocalypse Now: Final Cut is due to screen at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York on 28 April, marking the 40th anniversary of the film’s original release. The Tribeca site describes the cut as “a new, never-before-seen restored version of the film, entitled Apocalypse Now: Final Cut, remastered from the original negative in 4K Ultra HD”. Following the screening, Coppola will be interviewed by Steven Soderbergh on stage “to discuss the huge undertaking of restoring Apocalypse Now: Final Cut and why the time was right for Coppola to do this now, forty years after the original version and eighteen years after Apocalypse Now Redux.”
awesome, can't wait. also "and the five-hour unofficial bootlegged workprint." fucking christ i'm afraid to think of how many people actually watched that entire thing at once
wow that was not expected, but very cool wasn't this movie a complete shit show to make
oh my fucking yes
smells like victory
dude he had a heart attack mid-shoot watch this doc, very good insight: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearts_of_Darkness:_A_Filmmaker%27s_Apocalypse
redux is already considered to be worse than the theatrical cut, i have no reason to think this one would be better coppola hasn't made a truly good movie in decades and i'm pretty sure he's just lost his touch
It is? What? I've seen the theatrical cut a few times before and only got around to watching the redux one very recently and I thought it took the film to a new level, easily the better version in my opinion.
redux has split fans but i think it's still good apocalypse now, it is just different later coppola was never going to top his 70s streak of ridiculously great films, but theres a few good'ns: The Rainmaker, Tetro, The Cotton Club. he is very old now
there's not a true consensus but only a fraction of critics think it's a true improvement while the rest argue it's worse or not an improvement apocalypse now was finished when he was shitting out a masterpiece every other year and I just don't see how he expects himself to be able to improve on one of the greatest movies of all time when he currently can't even consistently make decent movies doesn't mean it won't be nice to see new/lost footage and a new restoration
well it's not like he remade the movie. he collaborated with the same editor too. and the original cut that was shown at cannes was a much longer cut than the theatrical. i think people's main issue with redux is tone/flow, but fuck that shit this is apocalypse now and the extra pieces are all relevant to the madness that was the vietnam war.
i prefer this cut https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jWGJ3pyLgs
No one is upset I'm just bothered at calling this one the definitive cut
I feel like the Redux's sheer length and enormity creates an atmosphere to the movie that is lost in the theatrical cut, as you feel bogged down and exhausted by the sheer longevity of the movie just as soldiers in 'Nam felt tired and bogged down by the end of their tours. Obviously the experiences aren't fully comparable in the least but the atmosphere of exhaustion it creates near the midpoint as a result of its pacing is truly enthralling for the movie and creates a whole new dimension for it. I've only seen the workprint once and it elevated that sensation to a whole new level. It was like a bad trip gone worse.
Even if it's the worst version of the movie, i still would love to see a proper version of the workprint. Also, This is Spinal Tap had a workprint almost the same length.
The workprint is honestly not bad because of its content but because of the structure and pace of the content. A lot of the scenes are in the final movie, just reworked and trimmed significantly.
When you have tiger blood, anything's possible.
lowkey annoyed at sorting out all the versions of films when they do this shit, but if that 5 hour cut is real i'm gonna take a fucking adventure with my friend LSD
I’ve watched it. Twice. It’s a mindfuck even if you’ve seen both official cuts.
wow so hope he found that sweet spot now.. this division among apocalypse now fans has gone on too long
