https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-47817833 The world's richest man, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and his wife MacKenzie have agreed a record-breaking divorce settlement of at least $35bn (£27bn). Ms Bezos keeps a 4% stake in the online retail giant, worth $35.6bn on its own. Amazon was founded by Jeff Bezos in Seattle in 1994, a year after the couple married, and Ms Bezos was one of its first employees. Both parties tweeted positive comments about the other in the wake of the announced settlement. It looks like he taxed himself.
The fact that so much money can even be owned by someone alone leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
You could feed a good proportion of the homeless and poor with that money for a year.
Wouldn't that put her in the top 20 richest people?
Imagine someone having so much money that when you get only a small portion of their worth and ending up being one of the richest people around.
That would pretty much put her in the top 5 richest women in the world at the very least.
The fact that one of his eyes are slightly more open than the other is something I myself cannot take my eyes off of
Boy time to get married to Jeff Bezos now that he's single
4th actually, Jesus christ.
so bezos lost more to a divorce than to state taxes?
His Disguise is failing.
Hope the blow was worth 35 billion
That amount could buy a modest house for almost every homeless person in Britain.
What about our poor, oppressed MPs though? Surely they are more deserving considering that they're 2nd homeless since the expenses scandal. 2nd homeless is worst than homeless because it has a bigger number.
It's pretty ridiculous that this lady gets to become on e of the top 20 riches all due to divorce. I dont like Bezos at all but its pretty dumb the courts just go "okay lol heres half of his stuff he earned(legally speaking)". I barely approve of average people losing 50% of their shit. But then again marriage is a legal contract, but a very outdated one imo. Regardless 20 billion is ridiculous.
we live in a society
Great job on jumping to conclusions instead of reading the backstory about it. Tbqh, if both are in an agreement in this situation with the split. Then i don't see no issue. The real issue here of course is the flat out insane amount of money involved, and Bezos' antics and the shit Amazon pulls constantly.
Bezos will you marry me Haha ;-) guys this will be a great marriage
Why are people so hateful towards him here? Like yeah I get it, he has shit load of money and he gave a ton of money to his ex wife, money that you and me most likely will never have in our lives. People act as if they didn't know he has so much money and this article just told them the "Person behind company that treats their employees like shit just gave away $35bn", it's not news. What's going on? Are people jealous or what? Or is it more about: "He's making more money than X% of the world combined, while we have poor and homeless who can't afford anything. WE NEED COMMUNISM".
Whoa a new self made billionare woman
Its cause a woman got money from the divorce. Even though both parties were in complete agreement with one another in this case. In fact, they showed positive messages to one another after the divorce settlement happened. Yet there's people trying to twist this as a "Oh sh'es a fucking Gold Digger". Even though they've been married for 25 fucking years...
I this the biggest resentment comes from the point that our society has allowed wealth inequality to be so big that this guy has literally so much money it's almost impossible for a nomal human being to spend even 1 billion in your life time. America’s 1% hasn’t controlled this much wealth since before the..
well lets have a look. according to google the united states has 554,000. The average income for a household in america is $56,516. this settlement is for US$35,000,000,000. if you gave an equal amount of that money to every homeless person in america they would each receive $63,176. myself, i earn ~US$17,500 in a year.
I don't personally have anything against him or his (ex)wife, but I have no love for the systematic inequality and culture of endless materialistic gain they embody.
What disgusts me more is the fact that Seattle - where I live, and where Amazon is headquartered - has some of the worst homelessness I've seen. And it's all due to them inflating the housing market because of the jobs. Nobody can afford to live in the city unless you're a highly paid tech guru. All the gay people I know on the Hill are living in multimillion dollar apartments that are smaller than the house I came from on the East Coast. The culture around here is very much "Where did you go to school? What do you do for work? How much do you make?" Let me tell you, if you do anything that isn't career driven, you get the biggest eye roll. There are so many homeless here, and I feel like they could easily make affordable housing with the smallest FRACTION of their money. Bill Gates just donated a shit ton of money towards creating affordable housing. Amazon should do the same.
I mean... What else are you supposed to tell the younger kids? You're not going to have a good time if you're not making money - Living costs are through the roof. "Encouraging" maybe pressuringthe youth to focus on career success isn't the worst thing to be telling them.
There's a difference between telling people to spend time on developing skills that will make them financially stable and pretending that earning as much money as possible is all there is to life.
She only got so much because they were married before he started Amazon.
I'm obviously marrying him because I love an independent, strong bald guy
Attributing people's hatred of this guy to jealousy is stupid. No one should have this much power.
