Honestly, I got conned into this shit multiple times with PSN.
That said, I guess it's the consumers fault in the end. Usually you are being notified about the auto-update, although it is rather easy to neglect.
I also remember reading that, while you can manage a lot of things about a xbox live gold subscription on the console, God forbid you can use the console to cancel the renewal.
Might have changed, but I don't own one to say from experience
Fuck yeah.
Every time I'm on the Sony account management I'm disgusted with this shit.
It would also be nice if they looked into Sony (and other companies) forcing you to save your card details in order to make a purchase. Its mad how Sony who are know for getting hacked every Tuesday also want to hang on to your card details for as long as they feel like.
Pretty sure they only make their payments system that obtuse so they can get you get their surprise additional 12 month PS+ sub.
Whenever something requires a card I usually just enter in a visa gift card with like 3 cents on it.
Not all the time though. Recently I wanted to buy 1 week of PSN access so I could get the free stuff in RDRO and when I redeemed the code, it defaulted to "auto-renew". I disabled it, and when I went to view my PSN profile... it was enabled automatically again even though I disabled it when I first redeemed the code.
Then it kept trying to guilt me into keeping it enabled (2 - 3 different "are you sure? Are you really sure?" messages) before finally disabling itself.
I rented a VPS from a server provider years ago for $100/mo.
They let you set everything up on the internet, but to cancel, you have to fucking call them.
It's an unacceptable practice. You should be able to deactivate a subscription with exactly the ease and convenience that you set it up.
They also hang onto your paypal details, and their profile page is so bad, I had to remove my Paypal account via Paypal itself. Already been stung before with their shit security when some prick abused a PSN store exploit to remotely charge other accounts (as long as they had your ID) for items. I was hit with a £250 "microtransaction" for a F2P I've never even heard of before. Took support 5 days to refund my account, and they were very reluctant to do that. I wasn't the only one hit either as I remember mentioning it to them down the phone and hearing "oh another one. Yes we know" as a reply.
Speaking of being hacked - they've got some really bad issues regarding account security. Almost every week (until I enabled 2FA), my account would be hijacked by some prick using social engineering tricks. I would change the password, and a week later I'd find random free games or DLC added to my account (obviously to check if I'd notice or check if the account was alive). Change the password and repeat.
That only stopped after enabling 2FA and changing the email linked to the account for a second time.
