https://www.ajc.com/news/local-govt--politics/transgender-woman-arrested-over-fine-sues-cobb-sheriff/9fjXac1OBGcMF1pWtY6uWO/ Sierra Castle says she was sexually harassed by deputies and inmates after jail staff publicly outed her as a transgender woman and refused to place her with other female inmates. They also denied her prescribed medication and ignored her requests for medical attention, she says. “I was afraid. I was embarrassed. I was humiliated,” Castle told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.  It all begin last March, when Castle visited a Cobb County police station to file a report about a minor traffic incident that resulted in damage to her vehicle. While there, officers ran her license plate and found a DeKalb County bench warrant for an unpaid $15 seat belt fine.  Castle was arrested on the spot and taken to the jail. On the way, she said she became anxious and informed the arresting officer that she was a transgender woman.  Castle said the arresting Cobb County police officer was professional and polite, but when the officer informed the jail staff at intake that she was transgender, the mood shifted.  The sheriff’s deputies began laughing at her, and a male deputy patted her down despite her objections. Staff also tried to change her identification wristband to read “male” and temporarily altered her records in the computer system, she says.
What absolute fucking scum
Seriously, the way this article reads make me think these people were just looking to get their kicks from making fun of someone thinking it would never come back to bite them because they work with law enforcement. Pieces of shit that somehow don't think about what they are doing and how it would scar someone further when trans already deal so much with acceptance of who they are and how society views trans.
explains everything
Arrested over $15 and then psychologically tormented. Welcome to America.
Thats Cobb County for ya... Worst place to be arrested behind DeKalb and Gwinnett.
The idea that there are people in this forum that think this is no big deal or support this is depressing
You think they give a shit? They relish the fact this crap happens, they enjoy it.
Ooooooof coooooourse it's Georgia. This place is a shithole.
Why would they even arrest her, unless she was carrying absolutely no cash and couldn't call anyone? It's a relatively common occurrence for something like this to happen here (according to police press releases), but just let them pay then and there if they can or can find someone who's able to.
Sounds like a certain jail needs to clean house, at the least. Would be nice to see all the assault / sexual assault charges slapped on the people doing the bullying.
I have a feeling nothing would happen, maybe a slap on the wrist. MAYBE. Stories are police abuse is ridiculous common in the U.S. We need to deunion the police, they are public servants, they are on the different standards and police unions have caught that blue line with cops stick up shitty cops including trigger happy assholes that wrongly kill innocents. We also have to revision who reviews cops when accused of wrongdoing and make sure it's not just the departmenting reviewing itself and saying "oh we didnt do nothing wrong". This isnt just a trans issue, or a minority issue or anything. It's an police issue. Too many "bad apples" that dont get taken out before ruining the bunch. Only way to prevent shit like this is to have a strong stance on all abuse from police across the board.
And people don't get why I have a nervous breakdown every time I'm forced to interact with a police officer
Because they already made up their mind that they hate trans people. And nothing can be said to change their mind on that
The fact that @Laika and @Chryseus2 think this is an okay thing for the police to do is disgusting, considering how consistently they rate in support of other civil rights abuses I don't care if this is a callout
goberment bad unless they stick it to the people i don't like
false. i used to be greatly against trans people. even some of my very old post history can prove this. but over the years ive gradually changed my mind on the matter and frankly in hindsight i realise how stupid my arguements as well as motivations were. people are people, just because theyre trans doesnt make them worse or better. if someones an asshole, then that individual is. not the whole group. you can convince people, just like i was eventually convinced albeit mostly by myself in search of trying to prove myself right, i proved myself wrong which is good in this case. fuck these guys for harassing her. theyre fucking police officers. start acting like it. how on earth are brainlets even allowed to become lawmen.
I've been advocating for ratings consequences for a long time, not enough people are behind it.
This is awful, I hope they actually get punished.
I'm speaking more in context of some people here who will come into every trans thread. Post the exact same arguments. Get told off how they are wrong. Wait for the next trans thread. And do it all over again. Most people wanting to change their mind don't do that.
oh, yeah i figured that might've been your meaning of your post but i just wanted to say that not everyone is a lost cause. i do wish people opened up their minds more to reasonable discourse and civil talks rather than bleating their "facts" and opinions and then just h holding firm without even trying to see the other side's perspective.
Because it doesn't make sense that the mods would ban people for "cares about ratings" while simultaneously caring about ratings as a policy
Which doesn't make sense because why even have ratings in the first place if nobody is supposed to care about them?
When ratings were initially implemented, Garry said that they were for the purpose of preventing short posts like "same" or "this". Ratings are equivalent to these short posts. Mentioning ratings is not a callout post. It's responding to bigotry that is literally against the rules. Similarly, rating this thread "funny" is expressing a bigoted opinion. @SIRIUS
Especially when you're literally allowed to rate people "asshole" or "snowflake" You can't give people such incendiary routes of communication and then go "okay so you have to just completely ignore it also btw"
There was some guy who went around and rated every thread about children being raped funny. I was told to report him but of course nothing happened. The whole "don't care about ratings lol" thing is pretty frustrating when people use it to mock tragedies you care about.
Or if it's propagating trains of thought that literally threaten you personally
American police are extremely decentralized and generally have no one to answer to, and police have the strongest unions of any job so again they can do whatever
Guys, i really really agree with you, but I just don't know what to do
People seem to care more about a troll trying to get a reaction over the actual story of a trans woman being treated like a subhuman. Ignore the person rating funny and focus on discussion about the story... they're rating funny for a reaction and getting it. You all know better, c'mon now.
