There's probably situations on the border where a vest might be smart but just standing that far on our side surrounded by security isn't one of them. The cartels and smugglers aren't stupid enough to shoot at a journalist standing in the US. That would be bad for business. My local news had a video of one of their reporters on the Rio Grande with a Border Patrol guy and he didn't even have a vest (visible, anyway) but they actually ran into dudes standing on the other side. They had an inflatable raft and we're sending people over and didn't really care that the BP was there. They just jeered and mocked him and told him to go away. They continued to send people over regardless and some dudes in the raft handed a woman and her young child to the reporter and BP guy. They sent her down the road with another group of migrants to meet up with other BP guys. The one BP guy and reporter were out numbered and couldn't do anything about the smugglers with the raft.
