Whilst I do think poaching is awful and I don't like people who do it, I assume that most people become poachers because it's really hard to find adequate work to support a family in many poorer places.
From what I've seen alot of poachers ain't like from the movies, wealthy white hunter with an accent hunting for trophy, is actually more local people that are fending off starvation by making money in a place where there isnt much ways to make it.
Imagine if it happened to this man instead https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CoqwR-8UIAA4p0D.jpg
Trump would invade all of Africa if that happened.
He's a Lannister though, so the lions would only attack him due to a territorial dispute, one imagines.

While some points about poaching due to starvation do bring up some good points, unfortunately it's a stupid game to play and you win stupid prizes for playing... It really sucks that cards are stacked against them, especially when the materials gathered from poaching are in high demand, but this is one of the risks you take when participating.

poachers know the risks they take, and they take that risk willingly when killing an animal can get you weeks or even months of food and supplies. the ones doing the work don't care about the environment or ecological diversity, because for many of them the difference is between actual life or death. the real scumbags are the people doing the buying.
It's easy to forget that the poachers are most likely some poor folk with little option to make a living in the first place. That being said, I now feel bad about bursting into laughter when I first read the thread title.
Most poachers try to avoid conflict where they can because nobody wins in those exchanges. Some poachers are pretty hazardous though and will actively open fire on other people as well.
