https://www.newsweek.com/russia-reinstates-yoga-prisoners-after-claims-it-can-make-inmates-gay-1388664 Wait what No really the fuck? How did this even
Causation doesn't equal correlation
i read yoga as yoda and was really confused for a second im still confused, but less so
If not the yoga... then what? What could be the source of this "gayness?" Clearly more research is required!
How horrible it must be to live in that country and be gay, let alone in their prison system. I feel terrible for them.
Russians are really insecure about their masculinity.
you're kidding me i've been doing yoga all this time for NOTHING
Eh, kinda? Not really? Being extremely flamboyant is actually very common over there, and nobody really equates it with femininity or homosexuality. Like, you can literally prance around in a bejeweled leotard on TV and people will have literally nothing bad to say about it.
Hmmm, how manu photos of Putin have they found in the possession of the gay inmates?...
Maybe they're concerned that yoga is just the shortened form of yogay...
Don't tell me you wouldn't tap that sweet, wrinkly green ass.
In Soviet Russia, anal sex you have,
And probably are unaware of the Village People as that group just lampooned the entire hyper masculine trope.
Hmm, that would explain this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwzUs1IMdyQ
IIRC this guy went missing since this video was made, so it's actually a counter-example if anything.
...that’s a singer called Vitas as the title says.
Whoops!
This is exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about
that says absolutely nothing? there's a ton of slapstick humor that works in homophobic countries precisely because the joke is "lol so gay"
Maximenko said that in addition to yoga, prisoners will also be taught qigong breathing exercises and dismissed any claims that it led to homosexuality. “The whole world is engaged in it [yoga], and no one is harmed by it and no one will be drawn to homosexuality. Even it did, we live in a democracy and everyone has the right to choose their own way,” he added, pointing out that homosexuality was not illegal in Russia. He said that Dvorkin had “outdated concepts” and added that “people of non-traditional orientation can occupy high positions, so we do not have the right to condemn anyone.” Maybe Russia should get this guy as its president.
The thing is that they don't equate campy shit or flamboyancy with being gay at a cultural level.
i understand, that's the exact reason why you can't just claim, from one specific instance that you perceive as normalizing flamboyancy across the entire cultural stage, that 'nobody equates it with homosexuality'
That's not what I'm basing my claim off of, I'm basing my claim off of the fact that I personally know a gender studies major who lived in Russia for their entire lives and this is what they have to say about the matter.
i'm not doubting that, i just find it hard to believe they'd say something like "NOBODY really equates it with femininity"
Peachy said flamboyancy not femininity.
My point is that their standards for what is feminine are different from ours
Haha. You're straight now.
yes, they said nobody equates flamboyancy with femininity, which is what i was addressing i get that, but "you can prance around in a leotard on tv" is just not a very compelling example that "being extremely flamboyant", in all its forms, is something nobody equates with being gay. like, rupaul's drag race has a pretty massive fanbase in america, and brazil has the biggest pride parade on the planet. while those look fairly normalized in culture from certain perspectives, brazil also has one of the highest rates of homophobic killings in the world, and you really can't say nobody in the US dislikes drag queens. if you trust this person and the point they were making, that's fine, but your account of it is in dire need of some more context
